Coma Blanca Vinyes Velles |
The powerful and characterful white 2019 Coma Blanca seems to age without any effort at a very slow pace. These Mediterranean whites take time to develop in bottle, where they gain complexity and somehow seem to get more elegant and ethereal. It was produced with Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca from four old plots on slate, alluvial and limestone soils, which seem to give it complexity and an extra dimension. It has notes of Mediterranean forest, pine needles, aromatic herbs, quince, yellow plums and pollen with elegance and complexity. It has a medium-bodied palate with a fine texture and supple flavors and an almost salty finish. You don't feel the 15% alcohol mentioned on the label. It fermented and matured for nine months in 500-liter oak barrels, 30% of them new. 2,718 bottles were filled in May 2020. |

Mosset |
The affordable 2019 Mosset Brut Nature was produced with the three classical grapes—Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada—that were fermented separately and kept with the lees for three months, then blended and put to referment in bottle, where the wine matured with the lees for 28 months. It comes gushing out with froth and bubbles. It's fresh, with 12.5% alcohol and a low pH of 2.9 and high acidity, 6.4 grams, and a combination of notes of fennel, aniseed and white fruit with yeast, smoke and bread dough. It is nuanced and elegant with balance and complexity beyond the price point. 32,543 bottles produced. |

Josep Coca |
The 2017 Josep Coca Brut Nature comes from a plot planted by the grandfather of Marcel Coca, the current generation and winemaker. It's mostly Xarel.lo with some 15% Macabeo that refermented in bottle where it was kept with the lees for 72 months. It has some toasty and yeasty notes and the classical aromas of aged sparkling wines from the zone—balsamic and Mediterranean with hints of camphor and fennel. It has a seamless palate with abundant, fine bubbles that give it texture. It's tasty, fresh and balanced, with a dry finish. 14,960 bottles produced. |

Josep Coca |
I also tasted the 2013 Josep Coca Brut Nature Magnum, as larger bottles have a different dynamic for sparkling wines refermented in bottle. This was kept with the lees for 119 months. The level of energy and bubbles in the wine when I poured it was surprising, and the glass got filled with abundant froth. The nose is very complex, characterful and different, with a savory, almost salty twist, reminiscent of meat broth, exotic spices and herbs. The palate is compact, seamless and balanced, with abundant bubbles, still lively and bright with years ahead of it. 662 bottles produced. The price is for a magnum. |

Terroja |
The white varietal Xarello 2017 Terroja comes from a plot of ancient vines on red soils, which is what "terroja" means in Catalan language. It fermented with indigenous yeasts at low temperature, matured with the lees for eight months and was kept in bottle for six years. It has a balsamic, almost minty nose that is faintly oxidative, with notes of peroxide and a polished palate with a chalky sensation. It has 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.1 and 6.3 grams of acidity. 2,200 bottles. It was bottled in May 2017. |

Reserva Familiar |
The 2014 Reserva Familiar Brut Nature was produced with Xarel.lo grapes from an 80-year-old vineyard on limestone soils from their Terroja property. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, and part of the wine fermented and matured in chestnut wood barrels. It refermented in bottle, where it matured with the lees for some 100 months. The nose is dominated by toasty notes, hints of smoke and nuts, yeasty, nuanced and complex. It has pungent flavors and a palate that is lighter than I expected, still lively and with abundant bubbles and a bitter twist in the finish. 6,460 bottles produced. |

Clos Fontà Vinyes Velles |
The 2019 Clos Fontà clearly smells of an old-style Priorat and is ripe with 15% alcohol but doesn't have notes of over-ripeness or excessive volatility. It mixes some earthy and rustic notes with floral and more elegant hints. It was produced with 60% Garnacha from slate, limestone and sandstone soils and 40% Cariñena from slate and granite soils from an old vineyard that seems to keep very good freshness and acidity even in warmer years like 2019. It matured in 225-liter barrels and 1,500-liter foudre (30% new oak) for 14 months. 6,393 bottles produced. |

Beauchene |
Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Grande Reserve' |
Beauchene's 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Grande Reserve ratchets up the intensity, offering copious cherry fruit and stone fruit allied to attractive notions of dried spices. Full-bodied and supple, this blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah is classic CdP, with ample length and soft, dusty tannins on the finish. |
