Cotes Catalanes Rose |
The 2023 Rosé, a light cotton candy pink in the glass, is smoky and sultry. Pear, toasted hazelnut and slate give an impression of seriousness, but juicy citrus tartness lights up the tongue and cheeks. The 10% Syrah in the blend lends some peppery tannins toward the close. This is cohesive and distinctive, and I like it for both of those reasons! |

Marqués de Tomares |
Blanco Gran Reserva |
Combining tradition (dating back to 1910) and modern installations, Marqués de Tomares is in Fuenmayor, in the heart of Rioja Alta. It has maintained the mastery of ageing wines in oak barrels that has marked out Rioja Alta wineries for so long. Although most of its production is red, this small-production white wine is a great example of Viura’s potential to improve with age. Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: Amazingly young, the wine keeps nice fruit and a fresh balance, with a lingering finish. It’s a style that’s based on deft ageing; a highly enjoyable wine, with a clear identity. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Delicate aromas of cedar and flowers, and a wonderfully elegant palate, building from a fresh entry to a complex interplay between freshness and oak. Lean, pure and understated. Memorable. Pierre Mansour: Very floral, rose petal nose and a dry, subdued palate. Suprisingly fresh and youthful; a restrained style. More time will reveal its true potential. |

Chardonnay Sonoma County |
A winsome face belies a stout structure in this sun-kissed Chardonnay. Pretty aromas of pear, apple and lemon balm wrapped in lightly buttered toast and baking spice leave a charming first impression. Hints of jasmine, mango and an intriguing whiff of sea breeze give the wine depth and interest. But the real focus is on structure, a balanced and integrated marriage of fruit, oak and minerals that entices with both sumptuousness and vivacity. The medium-plus body sports a round, creamy midpalate, the medium-length finish crisply textured with taut vibrant acidity. The flavors are intense, bursting with lemon, vanilla, and ginger at midpalate with good fruit persistence and a touch of salinity on the finish, a sparkle like when salt hits the palate. Ripe but not too ripe, a bit of oak but restrained, neither underdressed nor overdone. A good effort. |

Commanderie de la Bargemone |
Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Rose |
Pale and tender pink in the glass, the 2023 Rosé rushes the mouth with lively, almost spritzy acidity. Generous and tropical in its aromatics and flavors, the mix of tart pineapple, chamomile, white cherry, mint and salty sea spray is particularly enticing. What strikes me most about the 2023 is its balance. The finish is quite long—this is everything I want from Provençal Rosé. |

Reserva |
An old-school, ripe wine, the 2017 Reserva is a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 7% Mazuelo and 3% Viura, sourced from vineyards planted in 1940 in Rioja. Aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels, this garnet wine reveals notes of wild herbs, blackberry and elder, accompanied by tertiary nuances of bitumen and varnish against an oaky backdrop. Dry, taut and fairly chalky on the palate, this classic Rioja lingers long with integrated hints of volatile acidity. |

Pinot Noir Sonoma County |
This wine will satisfy your pinot cravings without breaking the bank, a lovely wine at a great price. It shows straightforward aromas of dark cherry, cherry cola, strawberry, and allspice but with plenty of seductive hints that reward rooting about in the glass. A bit of crushed rock minerality and an herbal subtext, rosemary with beetroot lurking in the background, give the nose interest and depth. The oak provides the spice but with no overt woodiness. On the palate, the cola note is salient upfront but a wave of mineral top notes, cranberry, and anise open up the midpalate and launch the finish. Medium weight and juicy, the wine’s sensual charm comes from a silky mouthfeel that continues throughout its gentle, deliberate evolution. The medium length finish shows remarkable fruit persistence on top of peppery yet soft tannins. Crisp acidity gives it backbone but doesn’t bite. This is very solid winemaking. |

Castellroig |
Reserva Familiar |
The 2014 Reserva Familiar Brut Nature was produced with Xarel.lo grapes from an 80-year-old vineyard on limestone soils from their Terroja property. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, and part of the wine fermented and matured in chestnut wood barrels. It refermented in bottle, where it matured with the lees for some 100 months. The nose is dominated by toasty notes, hints of smoke and nuts, yeasty, nuanced and complex. It has pungent flavors and a palate that is lighter than I expected, still lively and with abundant bubbles and a bitter twist in the finish. 6,460 bottles produced. |

The white varietal Xarello 2017 Terroja comes from a plot of ancient vines on red soils, which is what "terroja" means in Catalan language. It has a balsamic, almost minty nose that is faintly oxidative, with notes of peroxide and a polished palate with a chalky sensation. It has 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.1 and 6.3 grams of acidity. 2,200 bottles. It was bottled in May 2017. |
