2017	Andrea Oberto	Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata	With fruit from La Morra, where this winery is located, the Andrea Oberto 2017 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is dark and enriched, all thanks to the heat and dry growing conditions of this growing cycle. You taste the extra fruit power and concentration with baked cherry and blackberry. The mouthfeel is textured and rich, imparting more muscle than grace at this point. NV	Sabate i Coca	Brut Reserva Rosat 'Castellroig'	Marcel Sabate makes this wine at his family estate, blending garnacha, trepat and xarel-lo in this pale-salmon-pink sparkler. It’s light and crisp while the bubbles are explosive, the effervescence limiting the flavor to tart Mandarin orange. 2020	Raza	Vinho Verde 'Raza'	Arinto (50 percent) and azal (35 percent) are two grapes that perform well in the Basto district of inland Vinho Verde. Blended here with trajadura, the combination is refreshing and green-apple bright, with juicy green-pear flavors lasting in the finish. 2019	Palacio de Canedo	Mencia 'Maceracion Carbonica'	It’s hard to believe this beautiful wine is $15, and it’s just as hard to believe it’s made by carbonic maceration. Jose Luis Prada farms the vineyards surrounding the Palacio de Canedo with organic certification, the vines between 60 and 70 years old, their fruit creating a pure, succulent Bierzo that seems to glow red in the glass. The wine’s sweet scents of black cherries and beeswax are tightly framed by mineral-infused tannins, hinting at bitter chocolate. It feels saturated, fresh, cool and complete. Best Buy. 2017	Pierrail	Bordeaux Superieur	80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Lovely dark red color invites aromas of both graphite and ripe black fruits, with toasted notes. One of the most successful wines of the vintage, coming from an historic estate dating its 17th century origins to the famous Segur family. 2019	Pietro Caciorgna	Etna Bianco 'Guardoilvento'	The 2019 Etna Bianco Guardoilvento takes time to open in the glass. It’s coy at first, revealing hints of wet stone and pears as notes of lime and dusty florals slowly blossom. This is silky and pliant in feel, mixing ripe orchard fruits and minerals with a honeyed inner sweetness, all balanced by citrus-driven acidity. The Guardoilvento finishes slightly tropical with amazing length and a push and pull of tension. The 2019 is not yet fully formed yet, but it is packed full of potential.	Vinous	92+		2021-06-15
2016	Pietro Caciorgna	Etna Rosso 'Guardoilvento'	A musky yet captivating display of dried cherries, citrus peel, dusty florals and hints of animal musk rises up from the 2016 Etna Rosso Guardoilvento. It’s silky and fleshy in feel, wonderfully balanced by a savory display of tart woodland berries and minerals, all energized by vibrant acidity. While lightly structured through the finale, this buzzes with residual tension, resonating on ripe blackberry and hints of balsamic spice. 2018	Pietro Caciorgna	Etna Rosso 'Ciauria'	The 2018 Etna Rosso Ciauria opens slowly in the glass to reveal a savory bouquet of tart cherry, dusty roses, hints of incense and animal musk. Here I’m finding silky textures giving way to a concentrated yet harmonious display of wild berries and peppery herbs. Fine tannins come forward through the finale, framing the expression nicely, as this concludes with salty minerals and dark inner florals. This is deeply textural and soothing in feel, offering dark red and black fruits that take on a more savory edge as notes of wild herbs and white pepper form toward the close. It finishes lightly structured yet still classically dry, with inner rose notes and hints of tobacco lingering long.
