2018 Barra Cabernet Sauvignon Mendocino Charlie Barra died at the age of 92 in June 2019, and this was his last vintage. Having grown grapes at his Redwood Valley estate since 1955, he proudly touted his organic farming, certified since the 1990s, practiced since the beginning. He described his vineyard site as the benchlands of the headwaters of the Russian River and started bottling his own estate wines in 1997. Randy Meyer made this 2018 for Barra, a cabernet with a youthful, bright purple color that seems to carry through to the bright and luscious purple fruit. The tannins are herbal and dry—for one taster, they brought to mind sumac—but there’s plenty of sweet fruit to last through them and accompany fajitas, a sirloin burger or filet mignon. This is a terrific glass of wine to raise in Barra’s memory. ‘Year’s Best Cabernet’ Wine & Spirits 90 2021-04-19
2020 Giunta Malbec Nouveau Big bursts of spicy fruit. It smells like cooking herbs and blackberries. The palate is juicy and fat, with great acidity brightening everything up. This is an excellent wine to chill down and sip with a cheese plate, some good friends, and a sunset. VinePair 90 2021-04-15
2017 I Custodi Etna Rosso 'Pistus' This is a terrific entry-level red from the talented folks at I Custodi. The 2017 Etna Rosso Pistus shows a dark color and a mid-weight style with dark cherry and blackberry. Those primary aromas are followed by the usual succession of oak spice and volcanic ash. Here, however, the delivery of those aromas is particularly bright and balanced. There's nothing too complicated in this wine, but it hits all the necessary pleasure points and would surely make a great companion to porcini mushroom risotto. The blend is 80-20 Nerellos Mascalese and Cappuccio. Some 32,000 bottles were made. Wine Advocate 90 2021-04-14
2019 Prinz Von Hessen Riesling Trocken 'Hessenstein' Brimming with white fruit and flowers, this is an attractive, basic dry riesling for a region that has so often underperformed in this category. Properly dry balance and quite pronounced, lemony acidity at the very crisp finish make you think of salad. Drink now. Screw cap. James Suckling 90 2021-04-09
