Chardonnay Hawke's Bay 'Testify' |
This is the second vintage of the Testify Chardonnay. Having gone big on high solids and new oak in 2019, which led to a very reductive, stylistic interpretation of Chardonnay, Daniel Brennan has pulled back. This is a more subtle expression, focusing more on texture and restraint, and it's all the better for it. There's savory nougat-like character from French oak fermentation, a creamy lick from malo, and restrained nectarine fruit. A site within spitting distance of the waters of the Pacific delivers a flush of acidity that courses through the center of the wine, leaving the palate refreshed. |

Pinot Noir Martinborough 'Testify' |
While there's plenty of silken texture here, verging on opulence, this retains a sense of elegance and effortlessness. Expect flavors reminiscent of damson skin, violets, orange peel, cinnamon and clove, giving a rather festive impression. The finish is satisfying, with juicy acidity cleansing the palate. Super-fine tannins provide a very fine veil for the palate. Only seven barrels of this wine were made. |

Red Blend 'Trutina' Columbia Valley |
Based on 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance equal parts Petit Verdot and Malbec, the 2018 Trutina is another inky color beaty offering impressive aromatics of blackberries, black cherries, tobacco, chocolate, and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated, with ripe tannins, it has a seamless, elegant texture, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly over-delivers at the price. |

Red Blend 'Bear Cub' Columbia Valley |
The 2017 Bear Cub Red Wine (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 17% Syrah) is a terrific red offering lots of earthy red and blue fruits as well as complex notes of chocolate, roast coffee, tobacco, and even a touch of tapenade (no doubt due to the Syrah). It’s medium to full-bodied, mouth-filling, and balanced, and a superb value. |

Ramírez de la Piscina |
Gran Reserva |
Dark garnet. An expansive bouquet evokes candied cherry, coconut, mocha, cured tobacco and spicecake, and a floral nuance builds in the glass. Sweet, open-knit cherry-vanilla, blackberry, coconut and rose pastille flavors are complemented by hints of smoky minerals and candied licorice. The long, gently tannic finish shows no rough edges and leaves spicecake, cherry liqueur and dark chocolate notes behind. |

Graciano 'Rio Mazos' |
Dark violet. Cherry pit, cassis and licorice aromas, along with hints of vanilla and cola. Weighty and broad in the mouth, showing chewy texture to the bitter cherry and dark berry flavors. A spicy note emerges with air and carries through a long, youthfully tannic finish that repeats the cherry note. |
