2022 Bhilar Blanco David Sampedro is one of the best white wine producers in Rioja, so it's worth buying anything he makes, including his entry-point offering. Pairing Viura and 20% Garnacha Blanca, this skin-fermented, foudre-aged cuvee is a low intervention style with apple, baking yeast and pear flavours and a waxy, leesy mid-palate. 2025-27 Tim Atkin 92 2025-03-04
2020 Bhilar Phincas Phincas is a serious, low-intervention red blend that's fermented with 100% whole bunches. Pairing Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Viura, it's a funky, slightly earthy style, with notes of beetroot, clove and dried herbs, damson and black olive flavours and a firm tannic backbone. 2024-28 Tim Atkin 91 2025-03-04
2022 Bhilar Graciano 'Lagrimas de Bhilar' David Sampedro likes to pick his Graciano before his Tempranillo because "it doesn't like the sun". Fermented in concrete before aging in foudres, it has appealing sage and oregano aromas, lots of acidity, spicy tannins and a green, herbal finish that's reminiscent of a Maturana Tinta. 2024-29 Tim Atkin 92 2025-03-04
2020 Bhilar Garnacha 'Phinca El Vedao' Much fresher and more elegant than the more evolved 2019, this is a a serious, well structured Garnacha from 35 to 60-year-old vineyards in Elvillar and Kripan. Earthy, racy and slightly chalky, it has bramble, plum and red berry flavours, some clove notes from added stems, fine tannins and a lingering finish. 2026-37 Tim Atkin 94 2025-03-04
2020 Bhilar Garnacha 'Phinca El Vedao' The 2020 Phinca El Vedao was produced with Garnacha grapes from the place that names the wine, in the village of Elvillar. It fermented in a 2,000-liter concrete vat and matured in 500-liter French oak barrels for 30 months. It has a moderate 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.3 and 6.25 grams of acidity. It has a very balsamic nose reminiscent of a vermouth or a Barolo Chinato, with abundant sweet spices and aromatic herbs, intermixed with wild berry fruit. The palate reveals abundant, fine-grained, chalky tannins and a long, dry, clean and balsamic finish. 1,824 bottles were filled in September 2024. Wine Advocate 93 2025-03-04
2022 Bhilar Tinto Up a point since I sampled it a year ago, this is a younger vine cuvee of Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha and 10% Viura from David Sampedro's home village of Elvillar. Floral, earthy and chewy, with some meaty reduction, plum and bramble fruit and plenty of underlying grip. 2025-29 Tim Atkin 90 2025-03-04
2023 Domaine de Fondrèche Persia The 2023 Ventoux Persia is mostly Syrah but includes 5% Mourvèdre, raised two thirds in foudre and one-third in new barrels. Coming all from silex soils, its deep purple hue is followed by a Saint Joseph-like nose of beautiful black and blue fruits, violets, bacon fat, and pepper. With medium to full-bodied richness, a bright, pure, elegant mouthfeel, and ripe tannins, it shows the supple yet pure and incredibly impressive style of the vintage. Jeb Dunnuck 92-94 2025-02-25
2023 Domaine de Fondrèche Rouge The 2023 Ventoux Domaine is a normal blend of 60% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre that's brought up in a mix of foudre and concrete eggs. It brings more richness and depth, with a terrific core of peppery darker berry fruits, peppery garrigue, smoke, and crushed stone. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, and textured, it should drink nicely right out of the gate, yet this will age gracefully as well. Jeb Dunnuck 91-93+ 2025-02-25
2022 Domaine de Fondrèche Persia The 2022 Ventoux Persia is mostly Syrah and was brought up just like the 2023 and mostly in foudre. Red and black fruits, ground pepper, chalky minerality, and loads of spice define the aromatics, and it's beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, has supple, polished tannins, and a great finish.
