Valderiz |
A tight and full-bodied Ribera del Duero, underscored by the quality and quantity of the tannins. Cocoa powder, stones and blackberries here, with a big mouthful of creamy, satin-like tannins interwoven with the fruit. Long and impressive. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. |

Tomás Esteban |
Minty blackberries, incense and sandalwood with some cocoa powder, truffle and cigar. This is quite dense, compact and full-bodied with lots of chewy, sandblasted tannins that will still need time to dial in. Pretty bold and extracted style, but with very healthy fruit. This still needs some time. Approach from 2024. |

De Chiripa |
Tons of blackberries, cocoa powder, minerals and iodine on the nose, following through to a full-bodied palate that’s loaded with juicy black fruit and fine-grained tannins. Broad, extracted and concentrated, but it remains balanced. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2025. |

El Principal |
‘Calicanto’ Maipo Andes Valley |
The 2018 Red Blend Calicanto is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Carménère, 7% Syrah, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec that spent 10 months in used barrels. Red with a purple sheen. The markedly fruity, expressive but precise nose offers elderberry, sour cherry and black currant. In the mouth, the tannins are fine, active and a little spiky, while the flow is juicy and finish fruity and refreshing. A Bordelais-style wine with an Italian accent. |

The 2018 Memorias is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, 14% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot from Pirque that spent 22 months in one-third new French barrels. Red in the glass with purple flecks. The attractive nose presents clear notes of black currant and sour cherry and expressive hints of graphite and herbs. In the mouth, this is juicy with refined tannins and a slightly rough texture. A continental wine enhanced by its intense fruitiness. |

‘El Principal’ Maipo Andes Valley |
The 2018 El Principal is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot and 3% Syrah, aged for 22 months in two-thirds new French barrels. Reddish purple in the glass. The clear, expressive nose presents notes of plum and black currant and hints of herb and pepper. The palate is intense, tightly corseted and concentrated, with a juicy, potent flow and a slightly smoky backdrop. It remains to be seen how the tannins will develop in time, but I tried the 2010 and it was no more subtle. |

Sierra Salinas |
Monastrell 'Mira Salinas' |
Slightly more expensive, the 2017 Mira Salinas Monastrell sports a dense purple hue to go with a great nose of red, blue, and black fruits as well as peppery herbs, leather, and assorted meaty, spicy nuances. Rich, full-bodied, and mouth-filling on the palate, it brings load of fruit and texture while staying balanced and lively. It will keep for 5-7 years. |
