Thomas Henry |
Chardonnay Sonoma County |
A winsome face belies a stout structure in this sun-kissed Chardonnay. Pretty aromas of pear, apple and lemon balm wrapped in lightly buttered toast and baking spice leave a charming first impression. Hints of jasmine, mango and an intriguing whiff of sea breeze give the wine depth and interest. But the real focus is on structure, a balanced and integrated marriage of fruit, oak and minerals that entices with both sumptuousness and vivacity. The medium-plus body sports a round, creamy midpalate, the medium-length finish crisply textured with taut vibrant acidity. The flavors are intense, bursting with lemon, vanilla, and ginger at midpalate with good fruit persistence and a touch of salinity on the finish, a sparkle like when salt hits the palate. Ripe but not too ripe, a bit of oak but restrained, neither underdressed nor overdone. A good effort. |

Marqués de Tomares |
Blanco Gran Reserva |
Combining tradition (dating back to 1910) and modern installations, Marqués de Tomares is in Fuenmayor, in the heart of Rioja Alta. It has maintained the mastery of ageing wines in oak barrels that has marked out Rioja Alta wineries for so long. Although most of its production is red, this small-production white wine is a great example of Viura’s potential to improve with age. Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: Amazingly young, the wine keeps nice fruit and a fresh balance, with a lingering finish. It’s a style that’s based on deft ageing; a highly enjoyable wine, with a clear identity. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Delicate aromas of cedar and flowers, and a wonderfully elegant palate, building from a fresh entry to a complex interplay between freshness and oak. Lean, pure and understated. Memorable. Pierre Mansour: Very floral, rose petal nose and a dry, subdued palate. Suprisingly fresh and youthful; a restrained style. More time will reveal its true potential. |

Marqués de Tomares |
Crianza |
The 2020 Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano sourced from Sotes, Cenicero, Huércanos and Oyón in Rioja. Aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels, this garnet-hued wine presents aromas of wild herbs and black fruit, complemented by oak layers. On the palate, it is dry, rich and fairly taut with a lingering juicy profile, offering notes of black fruit and a clingy texture. |

Commanderie de la Bargemone |
Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Rose |
Pale and tender pink in the glass, the 2023 Rosé rushes the mouth with lively, almost spritzy acidity. Generous and tropical in its aromatics and flavors, the mix of tart pineapple, chamomile, white cherry, mint and salty sea spray is particularly enticing. What strikes me most about the 2023 is its balance. The finish is quite long—this is everything I want from Provençal Rosé. |

Coma Blanca Vinyes Velles |
The powerful and characterful white 2019 Coma Blanca seems to age without any effort at a very slow pace. These Mediterranean whites take time to develop in bottle, where they gain complexity and somehow seem to get more elegant and ethereal. It was produced with Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca from four old plots on slate, alluvial and limestone soils, which seem to give it complexity and an extra dimension. It has notes of Mediterranean forest, pine needles, aromatic herbs, quince, yellow plums and pollen with elegance and complexity. It has a medium-bodied palate with a fine texture and supple flavors and an almost salty finish. You don't feel the 15% alcohol mentioned on the label. It fermented and matured for nine months in 500-liter oak barrels, 30% of them new. 2,718 bottles were filled in May 2020. |

Coma Calcari |
The old Coma Alta has been renamed and is now called Coma Calcari to remark on the limestone soils where the Garnacha Blanca grapes were planted in the year 2000. I love the spicy and savory nose of the 2021 Coma Calcari, with hints of chicken broth, herbs and spices intermixed with flowers and white fruit and the serious, balanced and chalky palate. The grapes were picked relatively early to preserve the acidity but still at 14% alcohol. It fermented 50% in 500-liter barrels and 50% in stainless steel, where the wine matured for nine months. Only 2,568 bottles were filled in June 2022. |

Josep Coca |
The 2017 Josep Coca Brut Nature comes from a plot planted by the grandfather of Marcel Coca, the current generation and winemaker. It's mostly Xarel.lo with some 15% Macabeo that refermented in bottle where it was kept with the lees for 72 months. It has some toasty and yeasty notes and the classical aromas of aged sparkling wines from the zone—balsamic and Mediterranean with hints of camphor and fennel. It has a seamless palate with abundant, fine bubbles that give it texture. It's tasty, fresh and balanced, with a dry finish. 14,960 bottles produced. |

Mosset |
The affordable 2019 Mosset Brut Nature was produced with the three classical grapes—Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada—that were fermented separately and kept with the lees for three months, then blended and put to referment in bottle, where the wine matured with the lees for 28 months. It comes gushing out with froth and bubbles. It's fresh, with 12.5% alcohol and a low pH of 2.9 and high acidity, 6.4 grams, and a combination of notes of fennel, aniseed and white fruit with yeast, smoke and bread dough. It is nuanced and elegant with balance and complexity beyond the price point. 32,543 bottles produced. |
