Marziano Abbona |
Pressenda Barolo DOCG |
The 2012 Barolo Pressenda is absolutely beautiful. Ripe, creamy and engaging, the 2012 offers striking depth as well as freshness. Succulent red cherry and plum notes abound, while lifted, vibrant aromatics give the wine its brightness. The 2012 is not especially complex, but it is gorgeous and also a very strong effort for this up and down vintage. Because it is so well-balanced, the 2012 can be enjoyed young, but it also has enough depth to drink well for another decade plus. Silky tannins round out the finish. |

Marziano Abbona |
Ravera Barolo DOCG |
Dried flowers, tobacco, dried cherries, mint and anise are some of the signatures in Abbona's 2012 Barolo Ravera. The 2012 features bright acidity - one of the signatures of Novello - but at the same time, the aromatics are a touch forward. I expect the 2012 will always remain a bit edgy and nervous in style, but I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later, before the fruit drops out. The 2012 is an excellent choice for readers who want a Barolo that offers a good deal of aromatic and flavor complexity. |

Poggi ai Frati Riserva Chianti Classico Riserva |
Tobacco, game, crushed flowers, smoke and dried cherries grace the 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio a'Frati. A decidely virile, imposing wine, the 2012 exudes depth that only grows with time in the glass. I would prefer to cellar the 2012 for at least another year or two, but I imagine it will always remain a big, burly wine. There is no shortage of personality here. That much is certain. |

Stielle Chianti Classico Gran Selezione |
Made with 100% Sangiovese, fruit is sourced from the eight-hectare Stielle vineyard located at 550 meters above sea level. Compared to the Riserva that takes a more traditional approach, the 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Stielle is a more exuberant and contemporary wine. It shows thicker extraction and more evident use of oak aging. Some 40% of the wine sees stem inclusion. As a result, its consistency is rich, plush and dark, and there is plenty of generous fruit, blackberry and sweet spice on the close. This important wine is packaged in a heavy glass bottle that communicates the fact that this is the estate's flagship wine. |

Stielle Chianti Classico Gran Selezione |
The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Stielle is superb. Rich, ample and expressive in the glass, the 2011 offers striking textural breadth and richness, yet never comes across as heavy or overdone. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, tobacco, menthol and licorice meld into the super-expressive, generous finish. The 2011 can be enjoyed now or cellared for up to a decade-plus. This is a tremendous showing. |
