2017 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf du Pape Sables de la Crau More sweet red fruits, blueberries, violets, and awesome floral notes all emerge from the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Sables de La Crau, which is, as always, 100% Grenache from the sandy portions of the La Crau lieu-dit. This full-bodied, flamboyant, exotic Grenache has tons of upfront appeal, a sexy, seamless texture, and loads of personality, although it appears to lack the density and depth found in the 2016. 2017 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf du Pape - Prestige Lastly, lots of black cherries, earth, peppery herbs, and graphite notes emerge from the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige. It has more density than the Les Sables de La Crau, is medium to full-bodied, has ripe tannins, and plenty of length. It’s another character-filled, expressive wine from Jean Marie Royer. 2016 Marziano Abbona Rinaldi Barbera d' Alba Lots of blue fruit with licorice and walnut character. Medium-bodied, juicy and delicious. Drink now. James Suckling 91 2018-10-01
2015 Roucas Toumba Vacqueyras Les Restanques de Cabassole The 2015 Vacqueyras Les Restanques de Cabassole got a few expletives in the notes and is a terrific wine that’s up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Loaded with notions of black raspberries, cassis, toasted spice, garrigue and hints of chocolate, this beauty is full-bodied, concentrated and layered, as well as elegant. With superb tannin quality and a great finish, it’s going to continue drinking nicely for a decade or more. Jeb Dunnuck 94 2018-10-01
2015 Roucas Toumba Vacqueyras Les Restanques de Cabassole While not yet bottled, the 2016 Vacqueyras Les Restanques De Cabassole looks to be a superstar wine from this small estate. Loaded with lots of black fruits, chocolate covered cherries, graphite, roasted garrigue, and ample minerality, it’s a big, rich, concentrated Vacqueyras that has building tannins and a big finish. It’s going to benefit from a year or two of bottle age and cruise for a decade in cold cellars. The blend is 60% Grenache, 27% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre and a mix of permitted varieties. 2016 Chateau Beauchene Grande Réserve Châteauneuf-du-Pape Moving to the reds, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grande Réserve (80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre) was completely destemmed and spent 18 months in mostly older barrels. It offers a darker, traditional, peppery style as well as a charming, beautifully balanced style on the palate. It should certainly be outstanding. Jeb Dunnuck 90-92 2018-09-28
2016 Landmark Vineyards Overlook Pinot Noir Sourced from 72% Monterey County, 15% Santa Barbara County and 13% Sonoma County, this bottling starts with red cherry, clove, vanilla and star anise on the nose. The palate combines sharp baking spice with baked cherry, all framed by powerful acidity. Wine Enthusiast 91 2018-09-26
2013 Mas d'En Gil Coma Vella Aromas of raisiny berry fruits and barnyard lead to a full palate with lushness and grabby tannins. Earthy flavors of black fruits and spice amount to a savory whole, while this tastes meaty and feels chewy and dense on the finish. This is 70% Garnacha, with Carignan and Syrah. Wine Enthusiast 90 2018-09-26
2015 Tulocay Pinot Noir Napa Valley Haynes Vineyard Exotic and delicate on the nose, exuberant in rose petal and lavender, this wine is earthy and stemmy, with a weight on the palate that belies its underlying elegance and persistent acidity. Wine Enthusiast 90 2018-09-26
2016 Tibaldi Nebbiolo D'Alba DOC Strawberry essence, caramelized orange peel and roasted herbs. Medium- to full-bodied, juicy and round on the succulent finish. Drink now. James Suckling 90 2018-09-26
