Domaine Cabirau |
Cotes du Rousillon |
A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Carignan, and the rest Syrah all from black, schist soils in the Roussillon, the 2017 Côtes Du Roussillon is another beautiful wine from importer Dan Kravitz that represents a terrific value. Black raspberries, crushed flowers, spice, and hints of pepper all emerge from this medium-bodied, sweetly fruited, elegant red that's just a joy to drink. It should keep nicely for 5-6 years. |

Overlook Pinot Noir |
This blend of Pinot Noir from Monterey County (65%), Santa Barbara County (18%) and Sonoma County (17%) begins with aromas of boy-senberry, dried lilac and turned earth on the nose. There is a focused intensity on the palate, with more berry flavors as well as pie crust, loamy earth and a pinch of mint. |

Serge & Nicolas Maury Sec |
A smaller production cuvée, the 2017 Maury Sec Serge & Marie checks in as 70% Grenache, 20% Carignan, and 10% Syrah that was brought up in a mix of foudre and used barrels. It's also the first vintage for new winemaker Marie Verges as well as the first vintage to ever see small barrels, which were purchased from Guigal in the Northern Rhône. Deep purple-colored with a smoky, meaty bouquet of black fruits, licorice, crushed rocks, and black olives, it’s rich, full-bodied, beautifully textured, and layered on the palate, with ripe tannins. This fleshy, expansive barrel sample has tons of potential. |

Chateau Lancyre |
Coste d'Aleyrac Pic Saint Loup |
Blackberries, ground pepper, dried earth and peppered meat notes all dominate the 2017 Pic Saint Loup Coste D'Aleyrac, a ripe, rounded, complex, almost Northern Rhône-like red to drink over the coming 7-8 years. The blend is 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Carignan, brought up all in tank. |

Vielles Vignes Coteaux du Languedoc |
The first vintage of this cuvée after the 2015 due to a disastrous hailstorm, the 2017 Pic Saint Loup Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 65% Syrah and 35% Grenache that was vinified and aged all in stainless steel. Blackberries, earth, tapenade, and peppery garrigue notes flow to a medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, layered red that has tons of character. Coming from the oldest vines of the estate, it can be drunk today with ample pleasure or cellared for a decade. |

Nicodemi |
Notari D'Abruzzo Montepulciano Teramane DOCG |
A plush nose with loads of dark-cherry compote, vanilla and eucalyptus. Full-bodied and big on the palate with exuberant tannins and lots of fruit, but some acidity to keep this in check. Still, less could have been more. Drink in 2022. |

Notari D'Abruzzo Montepulciano Teramane DOCG |
Deep bright ruby. Hints of ripe red and black fruit, herbs and blueberry nectar on the nose and in the mouth. Nicely suave on the long, juicy, precise finish. |

Domaine du Pegau |
Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf-du-Pape |
White roses and grilled pears with hints of grapefruit and lemon blossom. The palate is driven on long, pithy fruit. Really impressive structure. Fresh, lemon and pear flavors to close. Drink or hold. |

Domaine du Pegau |
Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf-du-Pape |
The 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée hits the standard assemblage: 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% "others." Still in cask at the time of my visit, it has expressive floral and garrigue notes, plus hints of star anise layered over a base of black cherries. Full-bodied, deep and rich, this looks like a vintage to set aside for a while, with at least 15 years of longevity ahead of it. |

Ramirez de la Piscina |
Gran Reserva |
The 2011 Gran Reserva is all Tempranillo spent a full two years in American and French oak. This deeply colored effort offers terrific smoky dark fruits, leather, graphite, and some cigar notes. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, has beautiful density, building tannins, and a great finish. This is a rich, concentrated, classic Rioja with loads of character. |
