2015 Marziano Abbona Barolo DOCG A wide swath of plum, cherry, tar, licorice and underbrush flavors is punctuated by bracing acidity and stiff tannins. Hangs together nicely in the end, suggesting this should develop well. Best from 2023 through 2045. 1,110 cases made, 375 cases imported. Wine Spectator 92 2020-01-16
2018 Perusini Ribolla Gialla Luminous straw yellow. Apple, pear, lavender, tangerine, and ripe lemon peel. White flowers and honey flavors are long and luscious but also very elegant. Finishes saline, with sneaky concentration and complexity. Made with grapes harvested around mid-September (that date is noteworthy because the first day of harvest at Perusini was August 13) from five different plots that average more than 20 years of age. 2018 Perusini Pinot Grigio Golden-tinged pink. Strawberry, pear, herb and orange scents on the reticent nose. Nicely packed with herb and fruit flavors complicated by orange peel and stony nuances. Finishes saline, taut and long, with a curious iodiney note. This Pinot Grigio is macerated on the skins for 6-8 hours but the wine is very fresh and long. Vinous 90 2020-01-13
2018 Perusini Sauvignon Straw-green. Nicely pungent but refined nose of sage, rosemary, green fig and melon. Then more delicate in the mouth, with riper creamier fruit flavors similar to the aromas but less pungent and piercing, with excellent length. Vinous 90 2020-01-13
2016 Perusini Etichetta Nera Merlot Dark ruby with inky strokes. Ripe dark plum, smoke and coffee on the nose. Clean and nicely balanced in the mouth, offering hints of coffee and cocoa that add complexity to the ripe, dark fruit flavors present. Finishes with building minerality and relatively smooth tannins. Vinous 91 2020-01-13
2016 Perusini Refosco Good full ruby-red. Spicy aromas of blueberry, licorice and herbs. Then bright deep but quite suave, with lovely lift to the Refosco-driven violet, licorice and peppery flavors. Lightly structured and long on the aftertaste. Vinous 90 2020-01-13
2016 Perusini Cabernet Sauvignon Moderately saturated ruby. Aromas and flavors of dark fruit, cedar, graphite and minerals. Clean, fresh and rather politely-styled for a Cabernet Sauvignon from FVG, this finishes long and lively. Refined and offering good mid-palate fat already, but a few years in the cellar will help it expand further. This is really quite good. Vinous 91 2020-01-13
2016 Perusini Cabernet Franc Luminous red-ruby. Strawberry, cedar, black pepper and violet on the nose and in the mouth. Light and lively but blessed with sneaky concentration and impeccable acid-fruit-tannin balance, this closes long and perfumed. Not a behemoth but nuanced and scented. A lovely Cabernet Franc that offers early appeal and accessibility. Vinous 90 2020-01-13
2015 Perusini Picolit Deep, reddish-gold color. Honeyed nuances complement the noble rot-accented ripe tropical fruit, fresh citrus, yellow peach and fig aromas; very pure and penetrating nose, a light touch of volatile acidity adds freshness. Then very complex and precise in the mouth, with refreshing and clean flavors of ripe papaya, lemony mango, dried apricot, cinnamon, acacia honey and guava nectar. Closes extremely long, pure and vibrant with enticing sugar-acid balance (220 g/L r.s and 6,5 g/L total acidity). The grapes were 100% hit by botrytis cinerea and were selected via four passages through the vineyards, but only the grapes of two of those passages were used to make this wine. Aged in a mix of 112 liters French oak barrels and stainless steel this is a work of art. In fact, it’s one of the best Picolits I have had in a long time. Vinous 98 2020-01-13
2016 Bodegas Bhilar Struggling Vines Phinca Hapa Tinto David Sampedro grew up in Rioja Alavesa, naming his estate winery for the village where his vineyards are based (Bhilar is the Basque spelling of Elvillar). He and his American wife, Melanie Hickman, farm the vines organically, and abandoned tractors for a horse in 2014. This 2016 is mostly tempranillo, with six percent graciano, from a 7.2-acre parcel planted in 1967 on chalky limestone soil. The wine offers clean red-cherry fruit backed by firm, fine-grained tannins that lend it staying power. Notes of eucalyptus and mint suggest pairing it with grilled baby lamb.
