Saint-Peray Fleur de Crussol |
The 2017 Saint-Péray Fleur De Crussol is more classic Marsanne with its toasty, powerful, mineral-laced style. It’s medium to full-bodied, has terrific balance, and a clean, crisp finish. This cuvée always takes 2-4 years of bottle age to show at its best, so do your best to hide bottles in the cellar. |

Cornas Les Chailles |
As to the 2017s from bottle, the 2017 Cornas Les Chailles is brilliant, and readers should snatch it up. Rocking blueberries, blackberries, ground pepper, leafy herbs, violets, and graphite notes all flow to a textured, opulent Cornas that has sweet tannins, no hard edges, and flawless balance. It's brilliant bottle of wine that's going to knock it out of the park on the value scale. As with the 2018, it’s from a mix of terroirs, was destemmed, and brought up in used barrels. |

Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes |
The 2017 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes is cut from the same mold yet has a touch more tannins as well as mid-palate density. Notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, camphor, toasted spice, and smoked game all soar from the glass, and it's full-bodied, power-packed, yet elegant and seamless on the palate. Its wealth of fruit largely conceals plenty of underlying structure, and while it's already fun to taste, give bottles 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 10-15 years or more. The old vine cuvée comes from the Combe, Patou, La Côte, Les Mazards, and Chaillot lieu-dits, from 60+-year-old vines, was 80% destemmed and spent 20 months in 15-20% new French oak. |

Chateau Beauchene |
Grande Réserve Châteauneuf-du-Pape |
One of the best wines I tasted at this estate was the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Grande Reserve, which delivers a lovely mix of black cherries, vanilla, cedar and dried spices. It's full-bodied and creamy in texture, without any rough edges, yet has enough stuffing to age for a decade or more. |

Le Cadeau |
Pinot Noir "Red Label" |
A wine with polish and presence that opens with expressive raspberry, violet and spiced cinnamon accents, building richness and layers toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2028. |

Bodegas y Vinedos Valderiz |
Valderiz Ribera del Duero |
Five different parcels in Roa combined to produce this impressive cuvée of Tempranillo with 5% Albillo. Built to last, as the top Valderiz wines tend to be, this is firm, dark and well structured with a core of firm tannins, scented French and 10% American wood and layers of blackberry and bramble fruit. Rich, intense and well worth cellaring. 2022-30 |
