2020 Raza Vinho Verde 'Raza' Arinto (50 percent) and azal (35 percent) are two grapes that perform well in the Basto district of inland Vinho Verde. Blended here with trajadura, the combination is refreshing and green-apple bright, with juicy green-pear flavors lasting in the finish. The plentiful acidity and clean depth of fruit will take on pork with clams. Best Buy Wine & Spirits 91 2021-06-21
2019 Palacio de Canedo Mencia 'Maceracion Carbonica' It’s hard to believe this beautiful wine is $15, and it’s just as hard to believe it’s made by carbonic maceration. Jose Luis Prada farms the vineyards surrounding the Palacio de Canedo with organic certification, the vines between 60 and 70 years old, their fruit creating a pure, succulent Bierzo that seems to glow red in the glass. The wine’s sweet scents of black cherries and beeswax are tightly framed by mineral-infused tannins, hinting at bitter chocolate. It feels saturated, fresh, cool and complete. Best Buy. 2017 Pierrail Bordeaux Superieur 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Lovely dark red color invites aromas of both graphite and ripe black fruits, with toasted notes. One of the most successful wines of the vintage, coming from an historic estate dating its 17th century origins to the famous Segur family. The vineyard enjoys fine southeast solar exposure and a microclimate tempered by the nearby Fonchotte tributary. Decanter 90 2021-06-17
2017 Di Giovanna Nerello Mascalese 'Vurria' The 2017 Nerello Mascalese Vurria offers up peppery herbs and florals before settling on wild strawberries and wet stone. This is soft and fleshy in feel, yet it’s balanced by zesty acids and a cooling wave of mineral-laced red berries. Hints of grippy tannins make themselves known through the finale, framing the experience well, as this finishes classically dry under an air of inner rose notes. Vinous 90 2021-06-15
2016 Pietro Caciorgna Etna Rosso 'N'Anticchia' You could lose yourself in the seductive bouquet of the 2016 Etna Rosso N'Anticchia. Sweet exotic spices yield to crushed cherries, strawberries, candied citrus and white smoke. This is elegant and silky on the palate yet also lifted in feel, with ripe red and hints of blue fruit coasting along a wave of vibrant acidity. Its minerality comes forward toward the close, mixing with notes of grilled orange and red licorice that linger incredibly long. All of this, combined with sweet tannins that provide classic grip without ever getting in the way, creates a highly pleasurable experience. The N'Anticchia spends 18 months in barriques (50% new and 50% second pass), which is perfectly integrated here. Vinous 94 2021-06-15
2015 Pietro Caciorgna Etna Rosso 'N'Anticchia' The 2015 Etna Rosso N'Anticchia is autumnal in nature, perfumed and exotic, presenting a mix of dried citrus peel, clove, allspice and smoke followed by black cherries and candied ginger. It’s soft and fleshy on the palate, balanced by tart wild berries, hints of grapefruit and vibrant acidity. While it’s a bit extroverted in character, you have to admire its balance and spicy persona. This finishes slightly structured and long, resonating on dark fruits and inner florals. I’m usually not a huge fan of barrique in my Etna Rosso (10 months in this case), but the N'Anticchia comes across harmonious and highly enjoyable. Vinous 93 2021-06-15
2019 Pietro Caciorgna Etna Bianco 'Guardoilvento' The 2019 Etna Bianco Guardoilvento takes time to open in the glass. It’s coy at first, revealing hints of wet stone and pears as notes of lime and dusty florals slowly blossom. This is silky and pliant in feel, mixing ripe orchard fruits and minerals with a honeyed inner sweetness, all balanced by citrus-driven acidity. The Guardoilvento finishes slightly tropical with amazing length and a push and pull of tension. The 2019 is not yet fully formed yet, but it is packed full of potential. Vinous 92+ 2021-06-15
2016 Pietro Caciorgna Etna Rosso 'Guardoilvento' A musky yet captivating display of dried cherries, citrus peel, dusty florals and hints of animal musk rises up from the 2016 Etna Rosso Guardoilvento. It’s silky and fleshy in feel, wonderfully balanced by a savory display of tart woodland berries and minerals, all energized by vibrant acidity. While lightly structured through the finale, this buzzes with residual tension, resonating on ripe blackberry and hints of balsamic spice. The 2016 is in a beautiful place today, and it should continue to drink well over the next five to eight years. Vinous 92 2021-06-15
2018 Pietro Caciorgna Etna Rosso 'Ciauria' The 2018 Etna Rosso Ciauria opens slowly in the glass to reveal a savory bouquet of tart cherry, dusty roses, hints of incense and animal musk. Here I’m finding silky textures giving way to a concentrated yet harmonious display of wild berries and peppery herbs. Fine tannins come forward through the finale, framing the expression nicely, as this concludes with salty minerals and dark inner florals. The Ciauria is nicely balanced, full of character and a great value in Etna Rosso. Vinous 91 2021-06-15
2017 Pietro Caciorgna Etna Rosso 'Guardoilvento' A rich display of black cherries, plums and exotic brown spice is wonderfully contrasted by a hint of sour citrus as the 2017 Etna Rosso Guardoilvento unfolds in the glass. This is deeply textural and soothing in feel, offering dark red and black fruits that take on a more savory edge as notes of wild herbs and white pepper form toward the close. It finishes lightly structured yet still classically dry, with inner rose notes and hints of tobacco lingering long. The 2017 Guardoilvento may not be a vintage for the ages, but it will provide some highly pleasurable drinking while we all wait for the 2016 to fully mature. Vinous 91 2021-06-15
