Chardonnay 'Double L Vineyard' Santa Lucia Highlands |
Moderately light golden yellow color in the glass. This wine has more of the steely minerality that many Chardonnay aficionados relish. Aromas of petrichor, cold steel, lemon curd and brioche. Very classy in the mouth, with lemon-driven flavor and a hint of honey and blonde caramel. Soft and soothing in texture, with exceptional acidic drive, culminating in a quenching, lemony finish. This is a California Chardonnay that will please many white Burgundy geeks. |

Barolo 'Pressenda' |
Very nutty on the nose with clean raspberry undertones. Medium-bodied with firm but yielding tannins, allowing the fresh fruit to travel through the finish. Nice focus to this. Starting to be approachable, but better from 2023. |

Barolo Ravera |
Aromas of flowers, red berries and savory, spicy notes follow through to a medium to full body with a bead of very fine-grained tannin that is really tightly wound. Firm finish that needs to soften. Try from 2024. |

Gigondas 'Cuvee Jurassique' |
The 2019 Gigondas Jurassique is a step up and has more elegance and balance. Dark fruits, peppery herbs, leather, and assorted meatiness all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, with good structure and length. It’s not massive on the mid-palate, but I like the overall balance and suspect this will fill out with 2-3 years of bottle age. The blend is 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah. |

Saint-Peray Les Bulles d’Alain |
The newest vintage of Voge's sparkling wine, the 2016 Saint Peray les Bulles d'Alain is now made without any dosage. The nose is tight and restrained, but it's not as toasty as expected after four years en tirage, with hints of Marsanne's "white paste" character and citrus. Round in the mouth but fully dry, with a long, harmonious finish, it's a nice change of pace. |

Saint-Peray Fleur de Crussol |
Remarkably showing better than the 2011, the 2001 St Peray Fleur de Crussol (the wine's third vintage) boasts a dark, honeyed hue in the glass. It's medium to full-bodied, rich and honeyed in feel and flavor, with delectable hints of truffle and a touch of white pepper on the finish. A marvelous old Marsanne, it should be consumed in the near future. |

Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes |
Now, this is more like it. A big step up from the disjointed Les Chailles, the 2019 Cornas Vieilles Vignes is a classic rendering of Cornas, with hints of crushed stone, mint, blueberries and red berries on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated enough, yet it's not overbearing or heavy; it’s just deliciously drinkable and will drink well for more than a decade. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes. |

Saint-Peray Les Bulles d’Alain |
The 2011 Saint Peray les Bulles d'Alain was the last vintage to be made with a dosage—a minimal two grams per liter. This bottle was disgorged in May 2016. Richer and rounder than the 2016 tasted alongside, it offers pear, melon and citrus notes, a round, ample mouthfeel and a gentle, creamy finish. Drink up. |

Cornas Chapelle Saint-Pierre |
Compared to the Vieilles Fontaines, Voge's 2019 Cornas Chapelle Saint Pierre is slightly less impressive, although it offers more freshness and redder fruit. Hints of mint, violets and red plums mark the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and moderately concentrated. From a younger parcel planted atop the appellation and matured 20 months in only older barrels, this wine offers fine balance and drinkability but remains less profound than the Vielles Fontaines. |

Saint Joseph Les Cotes |
Voge's 2020 Saint Joseph Les Cotes—from a parcel in Mauves—came across as slightly exotic in the blind-tasting lineup, with hints of violets, licorice and stone fruit. Maturing in older barriques, it's medium to full-bodied and supple on the palate, with an attractive softness that lingers on the finish. |
