Dominio de Eguren |
Codice' |
Violet in color, this wine offers a nose of cherry, pomegranate and rose petal. It is spicy at first sip, with flavors of strawberry, pomegranate, butterscotch, iodine and clove. Somewhat substantial tannins recede into a finish marked by a note of salinity. Best Buy. |

Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes |
The 2019 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes is similarly inky colored and has a classic nose of plums, Asian spices, sandalwood, and iron. Medium to full-bodied, with good acidity and ripe tannins, it doesn't have the sheer weight, richness, or girth of the Vieilles Fontaines, yet it's certainly a more classic Cornas that will be approachable with just 3-4 years of bottle age yet evolve for twenty years if you're so inclined. |

Cornas Les Vieilles Fontaines |
Lastly, the flagship 2019 Cornas Les Vieilles Fontaines is a tiny selection from a single parcel of old vines that’s still resting in barrel (about 15-20% new). It brings more opulence and decadence in both its aromas and flavors, offering a monster array of mulled black fruits, smoked game, licorice, ground pepper, leather, and bouquet garni. Young and primordial, this full-bodied, concentrated, blockbuster styled Cornas has building tannins, a round, expansive mid-palate, and one incredible finish. It's going to take a decade or so to shed its considerable baby fat, but it’s a heavenly wine in the making. Note, this cuvée was first produced in 1988 and is only made in exceptional years. It comes from a single parcel of granite soils and 80-year-old vines and is named after a spring (or fountain) located on the property. It is 70% destemmed and always sees a touch of new oak. |

Cornas Chapelle Saint-Pierre |
The 2019 Cornas Chapelle Saint Pierre comes from the St. Pierre lieu-dit and would generally go into the Vieilles Vignes cuvée, but due to its unique character, the estate has opted to bottle it separately. The St. Pierre lieu-dit is a high-density planting from 1999 and the grapes were partially destemmed and the wine spent 20 months in used barrels. Beautiful black cherry, blueberry, cassis, exotic flower, and spice notes define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a layered, textured mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish. It shows the ripe yet also fresh style of the vintage nicely. Hide bottles for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following 15 years or more. It's a brilliant wine from this team I'd be thrilled to have in the cellar. There are a scant 2,500 bottles made. |

Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes |
A bigger, richer wine, the 2020 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes offers blockbuster levels of black fruits as well as crushed violets, beef blood, and scorched earth-like aromas and flavors. Rich, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, it has a great mid-palate, ripe yet building tannins, and a great finish. As with all the top 2020s, it has a terrific thread of freshness and purity. |

Saint-Peray Fleur de Crussol |
Rocking honeyed pineapple, caramelized peach, spice, and brioche notes all emerge from the 2019 Saint-Péray Fleur De Crussol, a rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated Saint-Péray that develops more salinity and minerality with time in the glass. I love its overall balance, and while it's drinking great today, it has a solid decade of prime drinking ahead of it. First created in 1999 as a collaboration with sommelier Daniel Denis (of Lyon), it comes from 80-year-old vines planted in limestone soils and is aged in a mix of 228- and 400-liter barrels, 30% of which are new. |

Cuvee Maclura Cotes du Rhone |
As to the reds, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône Maclura offers plenty of dark fruits, black olive, and peppery garrigue in its rich, mouth-filling, full-bodied style. It’s a classic, pleasure-bent 2019 to drink over the coming 3-5 years. |

Cabernet Franc Spring Mountain District |
Tobacco, flowers and new leather are some of the notes that emerge from Keenan’s 2009 Cabernet Franc. Open, radiant and expressive, the 2009 impresses with its mid-palate pliancy and juicy, resonant finish. Stylistically, the 2009 is more about place rather than the truest essence of varietal character, but it is a striking wine just the same. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. |

Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvee Reserve' |
Brilliant ruby. Smoky, mineral-tinged aromas of raspberry, cherry preserves, garrigue and exotic spices show excellent clarity and acquire a gamy nuance as the wine opens up. At once rich and energetic in character, offering well-concentrated red berry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors and a sweetening touch of candied lavender. Shows fine definition and finishes gently, spicy and impressively long, with repeating florality and steadily building tannins. |
