2016 Lava Cap Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Both concentrated and luxurious, this wine is a classic that offers a broad range of enticing aromas, plenty of delicious fruit in the middle and a lingering finish. Clove, cedar and cassis fill the aromas, while ripe blueberry and black cherry flood the palate. A great balance of a velvety texture and soft tannins holds it all together. 2017 Lava Cap Winery Chardonnay This wine is packed full of ripe apple and pear flavors that are accented by vanilla and butter. This is a full-bodied, barrel-fermented wine that's big in profile but smooth in feel. Wine Enthusiast 90 2019-08-22
2017 Domaine Chante Perdrix Chateauneuf du Pape The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape is terrific, showing classic ripe cherry and berry fruits, spice, and garrigue aromas, medium to full body, and a rounded, voluptuous texture. It's beautifully balanced, and while it has the sexy, sunny style of the vintage, it stays pure, complex and, again, balanced. It's going to deliver loads of pleasure over the coming 10-15 years. The blend is 65% Grenache, 15% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with the remainder Muscardin, brought up in foudre, demi-muids, and old barrels. Jeb Dunnuck 92 2019-08-22
2018 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Leading off the wines from Domaine Du Pégau, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc is another terrific effort that has a classic, mineral-laced style as well as plenty of peach, lemon, and honeysuckle aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied, fresh, and vibrant on the palate, and again, has this interesting mix of minerality and fruit. Jeb Dunnuck 90 2019-08-22
2018 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf du Pape The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée is a softer, more forward and charming wine that has beautiful dark fruits, ground pepper, violets, and ample classic Pégau meatiness. It doesn’t have the density of a top vintage, yet I love its balance, it has sweet tannins, and it’s already hard to resist. It’s going to be approachable in its youth but keep for 15+ years. 2017 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf du Pape Not yet bottled, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, and the rest assorted varieties (not destemmed), brought up all in foudre and old barrels. It has classic Pégau notes of ground pepper, earth, meat, truffle, and blackcurrants as well as medium to full body, good density, building tannins, and a great finish. Laurence compared this vintage to 2005, but I think this 2017 has more density and flesh. It’s a beautiful, classic Pégau that reminds me a slightly toned down 2009. Jeb Dunnuck 94-96 2019-08-22
2018 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition I loved the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Jean Royer. It's loaded with sweet kirsch and strawberry fruits and offers medium to full-bodied richness, sweet tannins, and a great finish. This is Grenache at its most elegant and finesse-driven, and it has a Burgundian vibe in its texture and complexity. Jeb Dunnuck 90-92 2019-08-22
2018 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Prestige has a similar vibe to the traditional cuvée yet has slightly darker fruits and more structure. It's elegant, seamless, and beautifully balanced on the palate, with a great mid-palate. This cuvée is 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre, all from the pebbly soils of the Bois de la Ville and Les Grandes Serres lieux-dits, brought up 65% in demi-muids and the balance in stainless steel. 2018 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf du Pape Sables de la Crau Similarly colored to the Prestige release, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Sables De La Crau is 100% Grenache from sandy soils brought up all in demi-muids. Ripe blueberries, strawberries, flowery incense, and pepper garrigue notes all emerge from this ethereal, elegant, beautifully balanced Grenache that has no hard edges, ripe, sexy tannins, and a great finish. This is another brilliant, layered, seamless wine from this estate that readers will love. Jeb Dunnuck 92-94 2019-08-22
2017 Morgan Winery Twelve Clones Pinot Noir Snappy raspberry and sweet hibiscus aromas are layered with dewy herbs on the fresh nose of this bottling. The palate is both high toned and fruity, with fresh flavors of raspberry, dried rose petal and Earl Grey tea riding on zippy acidity. Wine Enthusiast 93 2019-08-12
