2017 Domaine Alain Voge Saint-Joseph Les Côtes Brilliant violet color. Mineral-accented dark berry and cherry aromas are complemented by a smoky nuance that gains strength with air. Lively blackberry and bitter cherry flavors show very good depth. A peppery note adds spicy bite on the back half. Finishes bright and emphatically spicy, with gentle, even tannins lending shape to clinging blue fruit and floral notes. Vinous 91-93 2020-03-20
2017 Cédric Parpette Côte-Rôtie Montmain Bright purple. Fresh blackberry and cherry aromas are complemented by hints of cracked pepper, exotic spices and woodsmoke. Supple and energetic on the palate, offering pliant dark fruit preserve, floral pastille flavors and a hint of spicecake. Shows good energy and suave, floral thrust on the sappy finish, which features rounded tannins and an echo of baking spices. Vinous 91-92 2020-03-20
2016 Prinz Von Hessen Johannisberger Klaus GG Silver-green in colour, with a suite of perfectly defined, crystallised fruit aromas and ample spring-flower charm, too. Give it time in the glass: there's spellbinding Riesling intricacy here: minutes of happy sniffing. On the palate, the wine is pure, limpid, open, with high-optic flavours of orchard fruits, a touch of vinosity, perfectly judged rounded sweetness which finished all but dry, and some stony sobriety lurking below. 2018-2030. 2017 Vina Chocalan Vitrum Red Blend A superb premium blend from Fernando Espina that still sells at a very reasonable price, this is Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah based with some Carmenère, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Intense cigar box and incense aromas segue into a palate of bramble, blackberry and cassis framed by fine-grained tannins. 2022-30 Tim Atkin 95 2020-03-20
2018 Vina Chocalan Origen Gran Reserva Syrah Syrah can be a little underwhelming in Chile, but this cuvée with 15% made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Viognier benefits from its proximity to the Pacific. Savoury, meaty and intense, with tapenade, cracked pepper, violet and blackberry flavours and good underlying grip. 2022-26 Tim Atkin 93 2020-03-20
2018 Vina Chocalan Origen Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon I'm a huge fan of what Fernando Espina is doing at Chocolán, fashioning elegant, cooler climate reds with poise and class. This combines Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% Carmenère and 5% Petit Verdot and is focused, nuanced and refreshing, with mint and dill aromas, subtle wood and crunchy black cherry fruit. 2021-26 Tim Atkin 92 2020-03-20
2018 Vina Chocalan Origen Gran Reserva Carmenere Fernando Espina sources this assemblage of Carmenère with 10% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from the cooler Maipo Costa and it's a very restrained, well-balanced interpretation of the grape with subtle, spicy oak, leafy aromas and a long, balanced finish. 2020-26 Tim Atkin 92 2020-03-20
2018 Vina Chocalan Origen Gran Reserva Chardonnay The talented Fernando Espina makes this excellent value Chardonnay from Clones 4 and 5, with 40% fermentation in older wood and 25% malolactic. Sappy, subtle and textured, it's an appealingly refreshing, elegant style with subtle nutmeg spice and plenty of zip in its step. 2020-23 Tim Atkin 92 2020-03-20
2019 Vina Chocalan Origen Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc Located very close to the Pacific Ocean in the town of Malvilla, this clay and limestone vineyard is planted with Clones 242 and 1. The resulting wine spends 48 hours on its skins and is focused and intense, with flinty minerality, a hint of old wood complexity and a dry, saline finish. 2020-23 Tim Atkin 90 2020-03-20
2017 Lafond Chardonnay Santa Rita Hills Clean and pristine aromas of seared white peach, roasted apple, hazelnut and toasted oak show on the classic nose of this bottling. The nutty and citrus flavors are intertwined expertly on the palate, where Marcona almond and lemon-paste elements arise. Wine Enthusiast 91 2020-03-17
