Stel + Mar |
Cabernet Sauvignon Lodi |
The 2019 Stel + Mar Cabernet Sauvignon from Lodi, California is a stunning buy. If you like big, bold reds that drench the palate with a cashmere crush of complex fruit, this wine is for you. The entry calls to mind muddled blackberries laced with blackcurrant liqueur and a touch of creamy vanilla. Then the flavors veer toward dark chocolate, toasted nuts and roasted coffee that persist on the finish. This is a well-made Californian classic at an affordable price. |

Montefalco Sagrantino |
A dusting of cocoa and smoke blows off to reveal balsam herbs, crushed black cherries and dark exotic spices as the 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino smolders up from the glass. Its opulent textures are like weighted velvet, yet quickly contrasted by tart black fruits and nervous acidity, becoming more savory, almost salty, with each passing second. A fine coating of grippy tannins comes forward through the close, tugging at the palate with youthful poise, as herbal-tinged blackberries, licorice and hints of cedar taper off. The 2015 is a towering Montefalco Sagrantino that will require a number of years to come into focus, but will be worth waiting for. |

Very clear and aromatic with blackberry, strawberry and violet character, following through to the mid-palate with firm yet fine tannins and a vivid finish. This is really well done. Drink or hold. #81 of James Suckling’s Top 100 Wines of Spain 2021 |

Monastrell 'Mira Salinas' |
A very fruity and delicious alicante with bright fruit and lots of spice, crushed stone and dried fruit. Some cloves, too. Some chewy tannins and bitter-citrus undertones. Toasted. Drink in 2023, but already impressive. |

Garnacha 'Cepa por Cepa' |
This garnacha has really pretty purity of ripe-strawberry, cherry and orange-peel aromas. It’s medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. Very typical for a fine garnacha. Drink now. Screw cap. |

Domaine du Moulin |
Gaillac Methode Ancestrale Mauzac Brut |
Nicolas Hirissou farms his vines organically, fermenting this mauzac in the ancestral method, with the fermentation finishing in the bottle. It’s a sparkler amped up by leesiness, with notes of stewed apple and spice. Faint kumquat flavors and floral notes give it delicacy at the end of its surprising length. |

Saint Roch les Vignes |
Cotes de Provence Rose |
From a cooperative in Cuers, this is a restrained, elegant rosé. A blend of equal parts cinsault and grenache, it feels very Provençal, a smooth sea of strawberry, almond, lemon blossom and thyme flavors. It ends with a pleasant bitter note, a sign that it will hold its own with food. |

Barao De Vilar - Proeza |
Douro Red |
Álvaro van Zeller makes this wine from Douro Superior grapes, a blend of touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinto cão and tinta barroca. The flavors burst with blueberry freshness and a crush of strawberries, the fat sweetness of the fruit tended by green notes of peppercorn and basil. A supple and happy Douro red. |
