Morgon Cote du Py 'Javernieres' |
Interestingly, the 2019 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is more marked by its élevage in used wood than its 2020 counterpart—even though the barrels concerned were the same, just a year older! Exhibiting aromas of ripe berry fruit, warm spices and vanilla pod, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and tightly wound, with lively acids and powdery tannins, and it will require a couple of years' patience to show all its potential. |

Regnie Vallieres |
Bottled in mid-May, the 2020 Régnié underwent an eight-day semi-carbonic maceration in order to preserve the juice and impart more typicity. It has a perfumed bouquet of iris and peony scents percolating through black cherries and cassis fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Very cohesive, with a citrus-fresh finish. Delicious. |

Morgon Les Charmes |
The 2020 Morgon Les Charmes comes from Burgaud’s hectare of vines and was bottled in mid-May. Quite deep and initially broody on the nose, it opens to reveal black plum, crushed strawberry, blood orange and light granite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and generous, so much so that it belies that backbone on the finish. This might close down after a year or so; otherwise, cellar it for 2–3 years before acquainting yourself with its charms (no pun intended). |

Morgon Les Charmes |
The 2019 Morgon Les Charmes has a deep, concentrated nose of black plum, and forest floor, touches of oyster shell and sea spray emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity, gentle grip and a slightly chalky-textured finish. It does not quite possess the brightness of the nascent 2020, but it is quintessential Morgon through and through. |

Morgon Grands Cras |
The 2020 Morgon Grands Cras comes from the southern part of the appellation, on the limit with Brouilly and Régnié, and was bottled two weeks prior to my visit. Perhaps because of that, the nose needed time to settle, although the palate is more expressive, fresh and tensile, with saturated tannins, a superb line of acidity and an edgy, mineral-driven finish. Tuck this away in a cellar for 3–4 years if you know what's good for you. |

Morgon Grands Cras |
The 2019 Morgon Grands Cras is more open on the nose because it was bottled later. It offers expressive brambly red berry fruit, granite, touches of undergrowth and a lovely touch of star anise with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and crisp, and quite saline in the mouth, leading to a beautifully proportioned finish. Sublime. |

Morgon Cote du Py |
The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py represents a blend of six hectares from around the climat, each with its own attributes. It has an intense bouquet of black cherries, black olive and saline notes, all very well defined with wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannins, superb mineralité and a harmonious finish featuring black cherries, blueberry, blood orange and citrus fruit, full of nervosité and admirably persistent. Burgaud said that he had been advised to bottle the various plots separately, but I think this blend represents more than the sum of its parts. |

Morgon Cote du Py |
The 2019 Morgon Côte du Py, bottled in July 2020 after aging in concrete, has an airy, much more floral bouquet than the Grand Cras, pressed iris petals and potpourri emerging with time. The medium-bodied palate delivers fine, edgy tannins, just the tight amount of bitterness and a cohesive, pure and peppery finish that lingers long in the mouth. Superb. |

Morgon Cote du Py 'Javernieres' |
The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières was tasted from barrel and will be bottled in December/January 2021/22. There is fine intensity on the nose of layered blackberry, raspberry and blueberry fruit, but it is very tight at the moment, as you would expect. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite structured and a little more austere than the Côte du Py. This is a serious Morgan that deserves 3–4 years in bottle. Superb. |

Morgon Cote du Py 'Javernieres' |
Bottled in January 2021 after 12 months in barrel and four months in tank, the 2019 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières has a floral bouquet of violet and iris scents, plus touches of blood orange and iodine; hints of licorice emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied, very sensual, rounded and smooth, offering succulent ripe tannins and layers of black plummy fruit. That licorice note returns on the finish. Lovely, although personally, I prefer the Côte du Py this vintage. |
