Simple Life |
Rose |
This not-so-simple blend of 47% Tempranillo, 29% Barbera, 13% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 3% Zinfandel is a smashing success of watermelon, tangerine, jasmine, and red cherry, all in a juicy frame. Publisher’s Picks |

Merlot 'La Storia' Alexander Valley |
Also not yet bottled, the 2019 Merlot La Storia is another rock-solid looking barrel sample from this label. Lots of ripe black cherries, scorched earth, chocolate, and tobacco notes dominate the nose, and it's rich and medium to full-bodied, with a great mid-palate and outstanding length. |

Malbec 'Vino de Desierto Marino' Paraje Altamira |
The only wine I tasted this time was the 2019 Malbec from Paraje Altamira, which has the telltale floral notes of violets and lilies and is delicate and expressive, a little simple at first but with more complexity that isn't apparent at first sight. It has 13.5% alcohol and good acidity, so it comes through as fresh, balanced, elegant and lighter than the majority of reds from Mendoza, with very fine chalky tannins. I think this 2019 keeps up with the 2018. 2,400 bottles produced. |

Chablis |
Dried jasmine, white peach, lemon curd and crushed stone on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with crisp acidity. Clean and very approachable. Drink now. |

Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Tradition' |
I love the classic 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Jean-Marie and this Grenache dominated cuvée comes from the Le Bois de la Ville and la Crau lieux-dits and was only partially destemmed and brought up in 90% stainless steel and 10% demi-muids. Rocking notes of black raspberries, toasted spices, pepper, and loads of garrigue goodness all flow to a full-bodied, seamless, elegant Grenache that has silky tannins and tons of upfront charm. It’s going to put a smile on your face anytime over the coming decade or so. |

Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Les Sables de la Crau' |
The tiny production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Sables De La Crau checks in 100% Grenache from a sandy parcel in the famed La Crau lieu-dit. It was partially destemmed and brought up all in demi-muids. Incredible notes of black raspberries, mulled strawberries, cassis, orange peel, and flowery incense all soar from the glass and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, silky, polished tannins, and a gorgeous finish. This opulent, complex, seamless 2019 does everything right. It’s going to offer incredible pleasure right out of the gate yet also evolve for 10-15 years. |

Cabernet Sauvignon 'Elevation 1147' Napa Valley |
This is very focused and condensed with characters of blackberroes, forest floor, mushrooms and chocolate. Full-bodied, dense and chewy with very polished tannins, which give this wine exceptional form and tension. Bright fruit and impressive intensity. Needs four to five years to soften. Try in 2022. |

Sanlucar de Barrameda 'Xixarito' Manzanilla Pasada en Rama |
Fragrant with chamomile and saffron notes, the crunch of shortbread and the savor of rice husks, this is a clean, brisk and appealing Manzanilla, ready for a thick tuna steak. |

Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Grande Reserve' |
A blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Grande Reserve matured in a mix of tanks and barrels. Made from the estate's oldest Châteauneuf-du-Pape vines, it's impressively dark in color, yet not hugely expressive on the nose, showing just hints of red raspberries, cherries and orange zest. In the mouth, it's full-bodied and reasonably rich, with a velvety feel and some real concentration apparent on the lingering, spice-tinged finish. |
