2017 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf-du-Pape The 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is a terrific wine, and this is certainly another good vintage for the domaine. Giving up a classic, old-school bouquet of blackberries, currants, iron, bloody meat, and pepper, it's full-bodied, has terrific purity of fruit, serious tannins, impeccable balance, and a great finish. The cellar is going to be your friend. Jeb Dunnuck 93-95 2018-08-29
2016 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf-du-Pape A wine that’s going to rival or surpass the 2015, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée shows the quality of this awesome vintage with its deep, powerful, concentrated style. While Laurence says her 2015s remind her of her 2010s, I find a certain 2010-like purity in this wine as well as killer notes of black raspberries, blueberries, garrigue, and pepper. Possessing both power and finesse, full body, sweet tannins, and a great finish, don’t miss this beauty. Jeb Dunnuck 95-97 2018-08-29
2015 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf-du-Pape The 2015 Châteauneuf-Du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is a beautiful, classic wine from the Feraud family that offers powerful notes of blackcurrants, peppered meat, garrigue, and that classic Pégau spice that's hard to find outside of this iconic estate. Possessing a deep ruby/plum color, beautiful complexity, full-bodied richness, and firm tannin, it has closed up slightly since I tasted it from barrel and is going to need 6-12 months of bottle age to bounce back, but this is a concentrated, powerful vintage for this estate that reminds me a slightly improved 2005. 2014 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf-du-Pape The 2014 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée reminds me of the 2008 with its classic, balanced, elegant style. It’s not the most serious wine from the estate, yet it offers textbook garrigue, pepper, and meatiness, medium body, fine, silky tannins, and a great finish. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming 7-8 years, and given the track record of this wine for aging gracefully even in difficult vintages, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it drink nicely for longer. 2016 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige Deep vivid red. A complex and expansive bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, exotic spices, candied flowers and garrigue, and a smoky mineral topnote provides definition. Sappy and concentrated yet light on its feet, offering intense, appealingly sweet raspberry, spicecake and lavender flavors and a touch of sassafras, which adds earthy depth. Shows outstanding clarity and red fruit thrust on the extremely long finish, which is framed by supple, slow-building tannins. Vinous 94-96 2018-08-28
2016 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf du Pape Sables de la Crau Limpid ruby. Powerful aromas of fresh raspberry and candied cherry pick up incense, lavender and exotic spice nuances with air. Deeply concentrated red berry preserve and spicecake flavors are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals and floral pastilles. Supple, even tannins give shape to the strikingly long, mineral-tinged finish, which emphatically echoes the floral note. Vinous 93-95 2018-08-28
2016 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Tradition Brilliant red. Vibrant, mineral-accented cherry and raspberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied lavender and allspice. Juicy, focused and appealingly sweet, offering intense red and dark berry and spicecake flavors that deepen slowly on the back half. In a fairly rich style for this bottling, but there's no lack of energy here. Fine-grained tannins lend shape to the finish, which hangs on with strong, red-fruit-driven tenacity. 2013 El Principal Memorias Molasses, herbal black-fruit scents and earthy aromas are big and welcoming, but not 100% complete. A round, ripe, lush palate deals jammy blackberry and cassis flavors in front of a solid finish with mocha, blackberry and baking-spice notes. Drink this Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend through 2022. 2014 El Principal Calicanto This opaque blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, with smaller amounts of Cab Franc, Syrah and Malbec. On the nose, the wine is ripe and smooth, with marzipan, latex, black olive and cassis aromas. A full, creamy palate is cut by tartaric acidity, while this tastes of savory plum and clove. More rich than racy, this is a deep and intense blend to drink through 2022. Wine Enthusiast 91 2018-08-22
2017 Quinta de Curvos Vinho Verde Loureiro From one of the top two varieties grown in Vinho Verde (the other is Alvarinho), this wine is fruity, packed with citrus, and with a zesty tight texture. The fruit is ripe while remaining cool and crisp. Drink this wine from late 2018. Best Buy. Wine Enthusiast 90 2018-08-22
