2016 Nicodemi Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Notari Full ruby-red. Aromas of dark plum and black cherry are complicated by vanilla, musk and gingerbread. Juicy and high-toned in the mouth, offering densely packed flavors of mocha and underbrush lifted by a floral note. Round and easygoing; I could hardly tell this has 14% alcohol, but I would have liked a little fresher fruit. Perhaps a bit blocked today by its oak component. Try it in 2020, as a little extra cellaring will likely help the development of greater nuance. Made from a blend of three old vineyards planted on essentially clay-limestone soil and aged in new and used 500-liter tonneaux. Vinous 90 2019-02-01
