Barbaresco Riserva |
Aromas of cedar, pine forest, leather and a whiff of blue flower shape the nose. The full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, ground clove and tobacco alongside assertive, close-grained tannins. Give the tannins a few more years to unwind then drink to enjoy and to capture the remaining fruit. |

Compton Family Wines |
Pinot Noir |
Previously bottled under the Spindrift Cellars label, this has been rebranded as Compton Family, with the same winemaker and ownership. Fragrant and inviting, this has scents of pollen and flavors of ripe raspberries and sweet maraschino cherries. Though not a big wine, the concentration is sufficient and the herbs are lightly shown. All in all, quite pleasurable and a fine value. Editors’ Choice |

Gruner Veltliner |
A fresh cloud of peardrop and lemon rises from the glass. The light palate is just as appetizing in its freshness and shows some zesty, yeasty concentration. The finish is vivid, zesty and dry. Best Buy |

Sierra Salinas |
Monastrell 'Mira Salinas' |
They removed the Garnacha Tintorera, so the 2016 Mira Salinas is now pure Monastrell, with a little less ripeness and alcohol than the 2015 I tasted next to it. It matured in 225-liter French oak barrels, 20% of them new. I see a big jump from the 2015 here; this is a lot fresher and the oak feels a lot more integrated. It's approachable and juicy, with fine tannins and a more vibrant palate with livelier flavors and more finesse. It seems like a change in style toward more elegance and drinkability. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2018. |

Keenan |
Chardonnay Spring Mountain District |
Michael Keenan farms a large block of chardonnay adjacent to his winery on Spring Mountain, the vines planted in 1995, close enough to underground springs that they provide an abundant crop without irrigation. His 2018 is intriguing and layered, a complex mountain-grown chardonnay with an earthy tannic briskness to sustain it. The flavors range from lime to yellow apple and green plum, firm enough to absorb the oak in which it aged, and to last, with the cool pallor of a morning-sun wine. |

Punset |
Barbera d'Alba |
The Punset Barbera d’Alba offers pure plum and red berry fruit on a tangy, clean palate. While light bodied, this is a well made and balanced wine with good concentration and a firm structure. There’s a touch of astringency on the finish. |
