Domaine Jean Royer |
Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Tradition' |
Silky, ripe and smooth. Has the bold Châteauneuf generosity that some lack in 2021, with good ripeness of fruit and tannin. Together and harmonious, this is drinking well now, but will last a good few years. I would drink this young, on the succulent berry and plum fruit. |

Ramírez de la Piscina |
Crianza |
A juicy and berry-oriented Rioja with a stony edge to the black cherries and plums. Firm, bright and pretty succulent on the palate with medium body. Well-balanced even though it is not complex. Drink now. |

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Soloist hails from Requinoa in the Cachapoal Valley. Green with a yellowish sheen. On the nose, it presents pink grapefruit, herbs and grass. Plush with a mildly fatty feel, the refreshing palate ends with lingering herbal notes. |

Syrah 'Soloist' Cachapoal Andes, Requinoa |
The 2020 Syrah Soloist hails from Requinoa in the Cachapoal Valley. Purple in hue. The nose presents candied aromas with hints of spice against a plum and blackberry backdrop. Indulgent and juicy with a mildly concentrated feel in the mouth. The expansive, velvety texture precedes a spicy, languorous finish. |

Pierrail |
Bordeaux Superieur |
Dark cherries and cassis with olives, tomato leaves and cocoa beans. Juicy and fresh with a medium to full body. Really ripe, but still fresh, with firm tannins. Some coffee and vanilla in the finish. A modern Bordeaux. Drink now or hold a year or two. |

Andrea Oberto |
Barolo |
All these wines in this flight from Andrea Oberto show a powerful 15% alcohol content across the board. It's all a bit much. The 2018 Barolo del Comune di La Morra reveals ripe fruit, dried cherry, black rose and toasted anise. The bouquet is very pretty indeed, but the muscle of the mouthfeel suggests a pairing with grilled or skillet-seared meat. |

Pic Saint-Loup 'Coste d'Aleyrac' |
The best version of this cuvée I can recall tasting, the 2020 Pic Saint Loup Coste d'Aleyrac is a softer, lusher, more generous wine than past (or succeeding) vintages, loaded with blackberry and black cherry fruit. Full, rich, velvety and long, it's a terrific value. As usual, it's an unoaked blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Carignan. |
