Hentley Farm |
Shiraz |
A blend of fruit from seven blocks at this estate in Seppeltsfield, this wine completes its fermentation in mostly older French oak barrels, where it rests for ten months. Even though it sees only 15 percent new oak, it carries a deep espresso scent when first poured, needing air to move beyond the oak toward flavors of black olives, black currants and tar. Some red fruit begins to break through the blackness, presenting a clean, mineral-rich wine with some Barossa grandeur. |

Mas d'en Gil |
Coma Vella |
Gritty, spicy, schisty berry aromas are composed, while this Garnacha-led blend feels saturated and layered. Spicy plum, herbal notes and black pepper make up the flavor profile, while this is strapping, peppery tasting and complex on the finish. Drinkthrough 2022. |

Mas d'en Gil |
Coma Vella |
This is 70 percent garnacha and cariñena, from vines planted in the 1960s, blended with young-vine cabernet sauvignon. It shows plenty of ripe red fruit and notes of chestnuts, tea leaves and cloves. It’s impressive, with youthful tannins and tight acidity, needing a few years to mellow. Then serve with roast pork loin. |

The aromas are pure, with white flowers and some aromatic herbs plus a touch of pollen. The palate is sleek, delineated, and shows very good balance and subdued minerality. The entry-level white here is at the quality level of many of the top whites form other addresses. Intense and elegant. Bravo! 4,628 bottles produced. |

Mas d'en Gil |
Coma Alta |
Bright straw. Tightly focused peach, pear and orange pith aromas are accented by anise and succulent herbs. Fresh citrus fruit and dried pear flavors are lifted by tangy acidity and show a refreshingly dry edge. Deepens on the incisive finish, picking up a minerally quality and showing very good focus and length. Quite lithe but concentrated as well, which makes the food-matching potential here pretty limitless. |

Coma Alta |
From garnacha blanca in the slate soils of La Coma, this begins on notes of butterscotch and honey, then shifts into fresh, vibrant notes of lime and ginger. It has the weight and balance for roast pork. |

Charbono Suisun Valley |
This smells like textbook charbono, with a hyper-floral scent that one taster compared to magnolias. Its bright blueberry flavor feels unadorned, bursting with juiciness, its exotic floral aroma meeting darker, earthy spice and peppery grip in the end. It’s a curious but memorable wine that will make plenty of friends at a dinner party. Best Buy |
