Cabernet Sauvignon Crowley Vineyard |
Sexy, fruit forward and luscious, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Crowley Vineyard has sweet tannin, shows loads of red and black cherry, blackcurrant fruit and a savory, full-bodied mouthfeel with not a hard edge to be found. Both Les Behrens and his wife, Lisa Drinkward, seem to have produced a somewhat Right Bank St. Emilion style of wine in this vintage in Napa. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. |

Cemetery Cabernet Sauvignon |
One of the staples for long-term in the Behrens Family Winery, is their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Cemetery, which I believe comes from a small vineyard next to the cemetery in St. Helena. This is all Cabernet Sauvignon. The beautiful sweet cassis fruit, blackberry and spice box are impressive in this full-bodied, young, youthful, impressively endowed, multi-dimensional Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s still young, but accessible, because of the sweet tannin and opulence of the fruit. This should drink well for at least another 20-25 years. |

Labor of Love |
Dark red cherries, plums, mint, sweet spices, herbs and juniper berries meld together in the 2011 Red Blend Labor of Love. Espresso, menthol tar and licorice notes add complexity on the layered, expressive finish. The 2011 is 75% Cabernet Franc, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot, all from Martinez Vineyard on Pritchard Hill. |

The Change Up Red Blend |
The 2013 Proprietary Red Blend The Change Up is a slightly lighter style compared to some of the other cuvées, although it’s by no means a wimpy wine. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Syrah, the wine has a dense ruby/purple color, loads of juicy red and black fruits, soft tannin and a luscious finish. It’s right in the wheelhouse of the Behrens style: hedonistic, plump, sexy and best drunk in its next 7-8 years. |

Elevation 1147 Cabernet Sauvignon |
The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Elevation 1147, is all Cabernet Sauvignon compared to the Old Vine, which is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Petit Verdot, and the Three Acre that is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 2% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This is pedal-to-the-metal, seriously endowed, full-throttle Cabernet Sauvignon from Pritchard Hill. Chocolate, crème de cassis, incense, graphite and earth make for a complex, multidimensional set of aromatics. Full-bodied, round, juicy and, like so many 2014s, already showing complexity and easy appeal. This full-bodied, layered and rich Cabernet Sauvignon should drink well for another 20-25 years, but there is no reason to defer gratification. |

Three Acre Cabernet Sauvignon |
(blended with 11% petit verdot): Dark red-ruby. Dark berries, violet, menthol and bitter chocolate on the nose. Suave and pliant in the mouth, with a slightly musky coffee bean character to the dark fruit flavors. Nicely smooth 2011 cabernet with sweet, broad tannins and good length. Winemaker Nile Zacherle bottled the 2011 cabernets a few months early "to preserve intensity." He also did an abbreviated cold soak and a shorter, warmer fermentation. |
