Merlot Napa Valley |
Keenan Winery |
Keenan's 2013 Merlot is powerful, intense and structured, especially for an entry-level offering. Leather, smoke, tobacco and anise are all pushed forward in a savory, complex Merlot that offers plenty of nuance as well as personality. Hints of menthol and sage add further notes of complexity. A serious Merlot, the 2013 has enough depth to drink well for a good handful of years. |

Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Spring Mountain District |
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve from their Spring Mountain estate has a more saturated purple color, beautiful texture, loads of blueberry and blackcurrant fruit and a touch of spring flowers. This is clearly mountain, cool-climate Cabernet with full body, sweet tannin and impressive purity. This beautiful wine from Robert Keenan can be drunk now or cellared for 20 or more years. |

Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley |
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep and powerful from the get go, with beams of supporting tannin and acidity that give the wine its sense of proportion. There is plenty of nuance in the dark fruit, along with terrific aromatic complexity, but today the tannins are imposing, to say the least. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2013 for at least a few years, but even that may not be enough. This is another terrific example of the vintage. |

Domaine Latour-Giraud |
Meursault 1 er Cru "Charmes" |
Bright medium yellow. Slightly subdued scents of ripe stone fruits, oatmeal, hazelnut and menthol. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, showing lovely floral lift and surprising acidity to its fruit-driven flavors of pineapple and ripe peach. Lively more than large-scaled, this suave, fully ripe wine is a bit muffled today but is not at all exaggerated. Finishes with lovely purity, cut and length. -- Stephen Tanzer |

Castellroig Gran Reserva Brut Nature |
On the nose, this smells a touch yeasty and bready, similar to Saltine crackers. The mouthfeel on this sparkling wine is crisp and right on. Slightly bitter white-fruit flavors come with a dusting of white pepper and a lingering lime note on the dry finish. |

Annabella Chardonnay Napa Valley |
Michael Pozzan named this for his grandmother, remembering her cooking for the family. So it makes sense that this chardonnay is savory, gentle and generous—built for dinner. Rather than a blast of flavor, it offers bright notes of lemon and chamomile; round and very drinkable. |

Chateau de Lancyre |
Roussanne Val de Montferrand |
Lancyre’s Roussanne is a treasure hidden among a portfolio focused on reds. Made mostly from roussanne, with about 10 percent each viognier and marsanne, it’s grown in the north of Pic St-Loup, on a mix of clay and limestone. In 2015, the wine channels the warmth of the appellation in its deep yellow hue and tropical fruit scents, then does a stunning 180, focusing the flavors on stones and savory herbs. The richness remains in the nut-oil texture, but it’s clean and light, allowing the mineral flavors to shine. This wine lasts for days open in the fridge, realizing more detail with every meal. Accessible now, if you put it away for another five years it will continue to develop a deeper, nuttier complexity. |
