Terroir

Frey Vineyards are located along the headwaters of the Russian River, in Mendocino County, California, in small inland valleys surrounded by low hills covered with redwood, Douglas fir, madrone, oak and tan oak forests. Typical elevation of vineyards is between 725 feet and 950 feet.

Vineyard

All of the vineyards planted and cared for by the Frey family are under organic management, including our first vineyards planted in the 1960s. Frey Vineyards, along with a handful of other family owned vineyards in Mendocino County, joined CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) in 1980. From these vineyards Frey winery created the first wines in the US to be made from certified organic grapes.

Vinification

Using minimal manipulation in the cellar allows the authentic character of our soils and climate to express Frey wines which are made without any added sulfites, making them an excellent choice for consumers looking to avoid synthetic preservatives. Bentonite clay is used as the fining agent. Frey wines are Certified Non-GMO. Total naturally occurring sulphur at bottling: 2ppm

Aging

Frey wines are aged in stainless steel tanks, which guarantees that wines are gluten-free (often the glues holding oak wine barrels together are wheat-based).
