The estate Quinta de Curvos has history going back more than four centuries with many legends and estórias (to use the old Portuguese word for “stories”) that date to its founding, many of them told through the diverse surroundings, from the old manor house to the caves, and when passing by the lake, the gardens and the vineyards. Winemaker António Sousa is increasingly successful here. The vines tend to be fairly young, but the wines are very fine, wonderfully priced and rather serious. They are all basically real table wines, with structure and acidity. With minor exceptions, they are all dry, unoaked and still. (Only the “Superior” has some forced carbonation, but not much. Only the Colheita Seleccionada is listed as “off-dry” and “partly oaked,” but again–not by much). They are all fine bargains. Just go down the list and buy some of everything.
