Tasting Notes
A dark and earthy mix of cracked ashen stones, dried black cherries, grilled sage and smoke create a deeply alluring bouquet as the 2019 Etna Rosso Guardoilvento smolders up from the glass. This communicates pure elegance with its medium-bodied weight and silky textures, as a contrasting mix of ripe red berries and sour citrus thrills the senses. The 2019 leaves a coating of sweet tannins, more of an accent than an obstacle, while finishing long with an air of rosy inner florals and hints of licorice. The fruit for the Guardoilvento hails from vines on the north slope of Etna at 750 meters, planted in a porous and deep, mineral-rich mix of volcanic ash and sand. It was refined for eight months in second-pass barriques. There’s an undeniable drinkability here, but also the balance for a steady evolution in bottle.
