Vino de la Tierra de Castilla

The viticulture is sustainable - dry farming is employed and there is no use of fungicides, pesticides, and herbicides. On the leased vineyards in Manchuela, the Eguren family uses aggressive pruning and canopy management to reduce yields as much as possible while maintaining healthy balance in the vines. On the young vines from their estates, they employ their signature high density trellises which naturally reduce yields to up to one ton of fruit per acre.
Sustainable
The vineyards for Codice are mostly trellished vineyards planted at 700-800M within the limits of DO Manchuela. Much of the production for Codice anually comes from the Eguren family's younger estate grown vineyards in D.O. Toro and D.O. Rioja. These are vineyards that were recently planted by the family from a massal selection of old clones of Tinta de Toro and Tempranillo that they deem to be too young for their estate bottled wines.
Most of the vineyards for the Dominio de Eguren project are leased on long term contracts in Manchuela. The Eguren controls and lowers the yields as much as possible on these trellised vineyards planted in calcareous-clay soils in order to produce high quality wines. A significant percentage of the production is also sourced from their young vineyards in Rioja and Toro, planted with old clone massal selection Tempranillo and Tinta de Toro, before the vines are deemed old enough to be used for the estate bottled wines.
The grapes undergo a short cold soak followed by a crush and fermentation at low temperatures in stainless steel. Malolactic is carried out in neutral barriques.
The wine matures in neutral barriques for six months before being bottled after a light filtration.
