Landmark Vineyards was founded in 1974 in Windsor, CA and in 1989 relocated from Windsor, a town that was slowly being smothered by urban sprawl, to a spectacular piece of land at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain in the Sonoma Valley. Landmark became a small jewel of a winery and was built in the Spanish mission style. The winery is equipped with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment capable of producing 25,000 cases of wine per year. With the help of renowned landscape architect, Morgan Wheelock, Landmark Vineyards developed into a lush, gorgeously landscaped wine estate.
The first vintage of flagship wine Overlook Chardonnay was released in 1991. With a commitment to the variety, world-renowned consulting enologist Helen Turley was hired in 1993 to work with then winemaker Eric Stern. The collaboration led to excellent winemaking and under Eric’s direction, Landmark’s wines consistently garnered rave reviews from wine writers with their consistent style: whole cluster pressed grapes, fermentation by native yeast strains, and aging in French oak.
The signature wine, the Overlook Chardonnay, has appeared on The Wine Spectator Top 100 list 10 times since 1997. Landmark’s current winemaker, Greg Stach, has continued this tradition of crafting spectacular Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs for over 10 years. The Landmark Overlook Pinot Noir was made by Greg and released in 2014.
Landmark’s mission is “to make great wines that enhance the joy of life” and winemaker Greg Stach feels that quality and flavor begin in the vineyards. In addition to the Landmark Estate Vineyard, Landmark sources grapes from a range of different regions and those selected are among the finest in the highly diverse microclimates of California. While the variation of the wines from vintage to vintage can be dramatic or subtle, the crafting of each year’s wine is guided by a single overriding philosophy at Landmark: “less is more.” According to winemaker emeritus, Eric Stern, “The less the wine is manipulated, the more flavors and aromas remain to enjoy.”
Landmark Vineyards sources grapes from Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Barbara Counties to produce handcrafted, ultra-premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from some of California’s finest vineyards.
