Véronique Abbadie and Jérôme Aguirre
Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Lalande-de-Pomerol is a satellite of Pomerol, directly to the north of its famous, smaller neighbor. The appellation covers approximately 2700 acres. Its soil profile includes a thin layer of sand and gravel over limestone, but Lalande also shares Pomerol’s signature crasse de fer, the local name for the iron-rich clay subsoil believed responsible for the distinct aromas and texture in the region’s Merlot dominated blends.
Young parents Véronique Abbadie and Jérôme Aguirre met while studying at the Faculté d’Oenologie de Bordeaux. They now share responsibility for both their beautiful daughter Jeanne and the ten-acre Lalande-de-Pomerol estate established by Véronique’s Basque grandfather.
Jérôme, who is also of proud Basque heritage, gained international recognition as winemaker and vineyard manager for the critically acclaimed Pomerol estates Château Le Gay and Château La Violette. He now serves as the Technical Director for the Rive Droite estates of Hong Kong businessman Peter Kwok: Château Haut Brisson and Château Tour Saint Christophe in Saint-Emilion, and Château Patache in Pomerol, which includes Enclos Tourmaline. Véronique and Jérôme built a new cellar behind the home they share with Véronique’s mom, Etiennette, who serves as Haut Musset’s hospitality director and chef. The young couple has implemented a disciplined, organic vineyard regimen for their family estate. The single wine produced at Haut Musset is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, and extremely limited.
