The Azamor estate is found between Borba and Elvas. It is one of the highest points in the region. The wines benefit enormously from the location and daily fluctuation in temperature.
The winery was completed in 2007 with state of the art equipment within the old farmhouse buildings. The “monte” has 4 tasting and barrel rooms and a family chapel. Visits can be scheduled with advance notice.
The estate has 260 hectares; 27 of which are vineyards, 140 olive trees, 30 cork and pine trees. The remainder is dedicated to breeding rare Lusitano horses. Situated 350m above sea level, the vineyards were planted in 2001 and 2002 by Joaquim. Planted with a north south orientation with 50 plants per hectare, the canopy is 3 times the Portuguese average.
Our soils are schist with some clay patches, with the mother rock 1 to 2 meters deep. The Alentejo climate is known for its hot summers of up to 40ºC and cold winters of below 0ºc. Due to its high altitude the temperature in the summer will drop by 20ºC. Average rainfall is 450mm per year.
We have regulated deficit irrigation of around 30% of the trans evaporation rate. At vintage the grapes arrive at the winery smaller that average, but full of fruit aromas, concentrated flavours and soft ripe tannins. The terroir of the Azamor Wines allows us to hand craft wines that are authentic and reflect the minerality of the Azamor estate.
The selection of grapes include Portuguese varieties; Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, and Alicante Bouschet. International varieties include: Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot. This mix of grape varieties allow our wines to have a unique pallet of flavours.
