    Winery Overview

Nestled in the heart of the Tuscan landscape, Poggio Cagnano is an emerging, independent winery defined by its passion and sense of place. It is the ambitious project of driven winegrowers and makers Alessandro (42) and Eleonora (28), who are supported by the invaluable help of Nello and Achille. Their story is written across a 4-hectare organic vineyard, perched at an elevation of 450 meters above sea level. This unique terroir is perfectly situated halfway (20km) between the slopes of Monte Amiata and the shimmering Tyrrhenian Sea off the Argentario coast. This convergence of mountain and maritime influence creates a dynamic microclimate for their vines, which range from 10 to 20 years old. The vineyard is dedicated to local grapes typical of Tuscany and this specific area of the Mediterranean. For their crisp, aromatic whites, they cultivate Vermentino and Ansonica. Their structured, expressive reds are born from Sangiovese, Alicante, and Ciliegiolo. The character of Poggio Cagnano's wines is rooted in its soil: Macigno Toscano. This ancient, sandy soil is rich in Arenaria (sandstone) and Galestro (clay shale), with a distinct texture of 75% sand, 20% lime, and 3-5% clay. This well-draining, mineral-rich earth is the key to producing wines that are consistently fresh and savory, with a defined and fine structure. This minimalist philosophy extends to the cellar, where their approach is one of respectful patience. All wines undergo spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation using native yeasts, with minimal intervention throughout the entire process. The result is exceptionally pure wine, with total SO₂ levels kept below 30mg/L, allowing the authentic voice of their exceptional terroir to speak clearly in every bottle.
