    Cesani

    San Gimignano Merlot ‘Cellori’

    Italy, Tuscany, San Gimignano

    Red

    Winery Overview

Cesani holds a lovely hillside position in upper Pancole, overlooking San Gimignano. Pancole is a subdistrict in the San Gimignano appellation of Tuscany and was the first in the area to be recognized for its powerful reds in this otherwise white wine dominated appellation. Owner Vincenzo Cesani migrated to Tuscany from his native Marche. At the end of the 1960s, Vincenzo attended a 5-year school for oenology. At this time, Vernaccia di San Gimignano became the first DOC in Italy, so Vincenzo focused mostly on Vernaccia. In 1986, he moved from selling wine in demijohns to bottling Chianti and Vernaccia. Today, Vincenzo continues to focus his efforts among the vines, aided by his daughters. Letizia has held several leadership roles through the years with the Consorzio Vernaccia di San Gimignano, most recently as their President. While Letizia manages the cellar, Marialuisa oversees their very popular tasting room and bed and breakfast. Cesani is a sought-after stop along the enotourism circuit. The now property covers about 86 acres/35 hectares of land with 64 acres/26 hectares of vineyards, about 4,000 olive trees, and various fields and woodlands. Vines and olive trees were already growing on the property when Vincenzo Cesani took over and began to specialize in the production of wines and extra virgin olive oil. Today they also cultivate saffron, grappa, and organic beauty products made of grapes and olives. The 64 acres/26 hectares of vineyards spread over four distinct vineyard sites, although at most 2km from each other, represent very different production realities with a precise identity: Pancole, San Paolo, Vergaia and Cellole. In these different vineyards, managed as single living organisms, the wines are produced, each one the fruit of different soils, agronomic choices and harvesting. The wines produced are site crus which are curated and bottled as such. Vineyards: Pancole – located around the buildings of the winery are the vineyards of Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Chianti Colli Senesi, 300 meters above sea level, facing east and growing on soils of marine origin, mainly sandy and very rich in fossil shells dating back to the Pliocene. Here the historical wines of the company tradition have always been produced. San Paolo – The Clamys vineyard is located in San Paolo, 2 km away from the winery, 300 meters above sea level and facing north-east. This vineyard is only for Vernaccia di San Gimignano and is over 40 years old. Clamys, cultivated with high double-sided cordon trained system, finds a total symbiosis with a strongly clayey soil of marine origin rich in fossils dating back to the Pliocene. The wines that come from this symbiosis have a strong mineral character, intensity and persistence, and since 2015 they are bottled individually as Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Vergaia is located in San Paolo. This vineyard is separated from Clamys only by the provincial road to Certaldo, but represents a completely different world. It is located 250 meters above sea level, faces east and has a purely sandy soil, with tuffaceous formations of great depth. The vineyard is surrounded by a forest and is near a stream, the "Broto di Vergaia," which has a very special microclimate. Here, some new hectares of Vernaccia di San Gimignano have been recently planted and in a few years, they will give life to a new wine. Cellole was purchased by Vincenzo in the 80s. The two most prestigious winery crus are born from this vineyard today: the red wines Cellori and Luenzo. This land, dating back millions of years, is made up of enormous stones, alberese and clay, faces east and is 360 meters above sea level. It is one of the most beautiful places in the municipal area, where the view stretches over an infinite horizon. The Sangiovese, in this ideal land for its cultivation, acquires a perfect phenolic maturation and a tannic texture of absolute finesse. The grapes, all hand-picked and selected for maturation, variety and plot, are carried every hour to the cellars where the wine is made. For the fermentation and vinification of white and rosé wines, steel tanks are used, while the reds incorporate both steel and cement tank as well as French oak, depending on their characteristics. All tanks are temperature controlled and even regulated remotely by a control panel because many stabilization processes are carried out only with temperature control. The refining of the bottled wine takes place in rooms located within an old agricultural outbuilding recently restored, buried on three sides and with constant temperature and humidity. All wines from Cesani are Certified Organic since 2010.
