Ninty-five percent of the winery’s vineyards are dedicated to the Riesling grape. The Prinz von Hessen wine estate is a member of the VDP.Die Prädikatsweingüter, the oldest quality winegrowers association worldwide. As such, the winery is committed to maintaining the association's high standards. Being a member of the VDP is synonymous with a quality guarantee. Since 1957 the Prinz von Hessen wine estate has belonged to the House of Hesse Foundation, a family foundation of the Prince and Landgrave of Hesse. The House of Hesse is committed to maintaining its cultural inheritance in the interest of the public to insure that the cultural and historical connections between the State of Hesse and the House of Hesse are accessible to all.

    Vineyard

The Prinz von Hessen grapes grow predominantly in VDP.GROSSE LAGE vineyards: Johannisberger Klaus, Assmannshäuser Höllenberg and Kiedricher Sandgrub. All wines are created from the winery's own vineyards and cellars, with no sourcing.

    Terroir

Deep loam and loess with a gritty structure.

    Viticulture

A small parcel of estate vineyards, just .8 ha, sits on southward facing slopes at elevation of 120-140m above sea level. The vineyard site is classified within the Grosses Gewächs designation. The vines are cane pruned and range in age from 30-35 years old. At harvest, grapes are picked by hand and produce a yield of 30 hl/ha - the maximum allowance for a GG wine is 50 hl/ha.

    Vinification

Intense manual selection takes place when the picked grapes arrive to the presshouse, then the selected grapes are whole-cluster pressed to release their juice. Fermentation takes place over 2-3 weeks using ambient yeasts. Then, the wine spends seven months aging on its fine lees. Total sulphur at bottling: 128 mg/l

    Aging

The wine is aged for 1 year in large oak barrels - a requirement of Grosses Gewächs wine is that the wine cannot be sold until the year following harvest, and no earlier than September 1st of that year.
