    Winery Overview

    Nestled at the southern tip of the village of Johannisberg, in the Rheingau, the Prinz von Hessen winery ranks amongst Germany’s finest Riesling producers. Numerous accolades, national and international, reflect the extraordinarily high quality of the wines. The Riesling vines are cultivated on the top sites of the Rheingau, among them such prestigious names as Johannisberger Klaus, Winkeler Hasensprung and Winkeler Jesuitengarten. Ninty-five percent of the winery’s vineyards are dedicated to the Riesling grape. The Prinz von Hessen wine estate is a member of the VDP.Die Prädikatsweingüter, the oldest quality winegrowers association worldwide. As such, the winery is committed to maintaining the association's high standards. Being a member of the VDP is synonymous with a quality guarantee. Since 1957 the Prinz von Hessen wine estate has belonged to the House of Hesse Foundation, a family foundation of the Prince and Landgrave of Hesse. The House of Hesse is committed to maintaining its cultural inheritance in the interest of the public to insure that the cultural and historical connections between the State of Hesse and the House of Hesse are accessible to all.

    Vineyard

    The Prinz von Hessen grapes grow predominantly in VDP.GROSSE LAGE vineyards: Johannisberger Klaus, Assmannshäuser Höllenberg and Kiedricher Sandgrub. All wines are created from the winery's own vineyards and cellars, with no sourcing.

    Terroir

    Soils composed of stony loess and loam deep with gravel and quarzite.

    Viticulture

    10 ha of estate vines planted 120-160m above sea level, on southern-facing slopes. The vines range from 15-25 years old and are cane pruned. Great care is taken to prune and harvest the vines manually to ensure that no poor-quality grapes are included.

    Vinification

    Fermentation takes place over a span of 3-5 weeks in stainless steel tanks, at a cool temperature, to preserve fresh & fruity qualities of the wine. Total sulphur at bottling: 138mg/l

    Aging

    Aged in large stainless steel tanks for 3 months prior to bottling.
