    Winery Overview

America’s first organic and Biodynamic winery - Producing award-winning vegan, gluten free wines with no added sulfites since 1980. We are a third-generation family-owned and operated winery located at the pristine headwaters of the Russian River in Redwood Valley, Mendocino County, California. At Frey Vineyards we combine the best of modern and traditional winemaking methods to showcase distinctive varietal flavors. Through minimal manipulation in the cellar, we allow the wines to express the authentic character of our soils and climate. For over three decades we have been vanguards in crafting wine without added sulfites, a synthetic preservative added to most other wines (even wines made with organically grown grapes!) that can cause adverse allergic reactions in some people. Our Organic and Biodynamic farming methods encourage care for the soil, groundwater, and wildlife, promoting rich biodiversity in the vineyard. Ninety percent of our land is held as unspoiled natural habitat with a diverse mix of native plants and animals. As stewards of the land, we emphasize producing organic and Biodynamic wine of the highest quality while caring for planet and palate alike.

    Vineyard

All of the vineyards planted and cared for by the Frey family are under organic management, including our first vineyards planted in the 1960s. Frey Vineyards, along with a handful of other family owned vineyards in Mendocino County, joined CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) in 1980. From these vineyards Frey winery created the first wines in the US to be made from certified organic grapes.

    Soil

Frey Vineyards are located along the headwaters of the Russian River, in Mendocino County, California, in small inland valleys surrounded by low hills covered with redwood, Douglas fir, madrone, oak and tan oak forests. Typical elevation of vineyards is between 725 feet and 950 feet.

    Viticulture

100% Certified organic methods are used, with emphasis on improving the health of the soil, the groundwater and the wildlife.

    Vinification

Using minimal manipulation in the cellar to allow the authentic character of the soils and climate to show. Frey wines are made without any added sulfites, making them an excellent choice for consumers looking to avoid synthetic preservatives. Bentonite clay is used as the fining agent. Frey wines are Certified Non-GMO.

    Aging

Frey wines are aged in stainless steel tanks, which guarantees that wines are gluten-free (often the glues holding oak wine barrels together are wheat-based).

    Tasting Notes

Flavors of black currant, damson plum, and rose show fullness and vibrancy in this well-balanced Malbec. An elegant, dry finish complements grilled lamb chops or a robust vegetable tagine.
